Virus Has Screwed Arma 2: OA

Recommended Posts

Okay, so recently I saw that my hard drive was getting fuller without me doing anything. About a GB gone in the course of 20 minutes and it was doing this continually. I scanned my computer and somehow a trojan managed to slip through. I go to play DayZ and it says "Bad Serial Number Given in Setup". I go and check my registry and the key is not there. I change the permissions and everything and it is still not showing up. I've heard that others have had their key stolen/deleted whatever you want to say, could that have perhaps happened in this situation? I checked Steam and it shows I have a key. I have no idea how to put that key back into the registry due to the format that you have to type it in.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the trojan is gone.

Your HDD filling up is probably due to frequent system restore files. (It could be something completely else but you can try this and see if it helps or not)

- Right click on c: (or whatever the partition is called, main one is c:)

- Click properties and click disk cleanup -> more options -> system restore and shadow copies -> Clean up

- Check disk cleanup to check temporary files and such. You can delete this by checking them on and then hit OK

I wouldn't know about your key though it seems to happen a lot, delete the game from steam and the registry entry and attempt to re-install it or try the below first.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/33930/discussions/1/864961175465159223/

ERROR: "Bad Serial Number Given on Setup" or "Invalid or Missing Serial Number"

SOLUTION 1: Close Steam, then run as administrator. Run ARMA 2. Run ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead.

SOLUTION 2: Delete a file called "localconfig.vdf" in .\Steam\userdata\#\config
The # is a series of digits that varies depending on your account. (If you've had multiple accounts active through your computer.) Restart Steam and run it as administrator.

SOLUTION 3:
1. Uninstall A2/A2:OA entirely. (Including the folders in registry.)
2. Close Steam.
3. Run Steam as administrator and reinstall the games.

WHY: (solution 1) Steam writes your serial numbers into your registry , but cannot do it if it doesn't have the rights to edit registry. Running both games means that Steam will re-write both serial numbers for both games. That way DayZ will work the next time you try to play it.

Also scan your system in safe mode with Malwarebytes and Avira or Kaspersky.

Found out why it wasn't working. I'm an idiot. I had reinstalled OA last night and I usually run it by going to wherever the file is. I ran it through steam and I forgot it had to install BE. I only thought of it based off what you said!
