How to end the KOS issue!

Recommended Posts

Yes KoS... the thrill of ~COMBAT~. Sitting on a hill shooting a new spawn who doesn't have a gun is not the thrill of combat. ;) I know you say you don't do this, but others do. I know we will never stop that.

However, a lot of KoS happens not because I or someone else really wants to kill them, but because to leave them alive means I will probably be killed. I feel bad for those guys, but there are times I have to shoot them. I'd like some options so I don't HAVE to shoot them or at least know who is more trustworthy. ;)

You have a good handle on this. I agree with what you've said, except from what you've said, you still KOS.

Unless it's only bandits you KOS, you're a KOS'er. Right?

Alright, here's my view.

Bandits KOSing is natural. They're bandits. Survivors/heroes KOSing bandits is natural. They're killing bandits.

The humanity/bandit skin is the first key to "balance." Seems to work pretty well on public servers.

A bandit skin can do his thing, and others can do theirs. They hunt each other.

A bandit can't trust another bandit, a survivor/hero should simply KOS bandits, and be able trust a non-bandit.

Sometimes he'll get burned, but the burner will get a bandit skin right then, or soon after.

The humanity/bandit skin mechanic is very important.

As our friend KOS has said, he'll jump on private servers dressed as a survivor/hero so he can KOS unsuspecting survivor/heroes.

Even change keys with a hero pal.

I don't see that as a big problem, and don't know how it should be addressed. Seems to be the nature of private servers.

Now here's something that's a bit counter-intuitive. Runs against the OP.

What's the main excuse for KOS? "Gear." To keep it, or get it.

Not actually getting killed, or respawning on the coast. It's gear.

What kind of gear? Not beans. Not bandages. Not Coke.

Guns and ammo.

If guns and ammo were common coastal spawns, all these excuses about "Why I KOS" would evaporate.

The common killers and the weak would be exposed.

Guns are pretty useless against zed swarms.

But very useful against other players, and the primary KOS excuse.

Of course those bandits who play to kill - like KOS - don't need excuses.

They are honest about their motives.

I respect them more than the KOS excuse-makers.

Now I'm not saying spawning more guns would reduce KOS. Might just make more bandits.

Or maybe not.

Seems they eliminated a Makarov in the loadout because new spawns were KOSing each other on the beach.

So there might be no answer to KOS.

I'd just like to see the KOS gear excuse disappear, and see what happens then.

I believe things can be added to encourage players to cooperate but without removing any of the flavour of the mod. For instance, consider the possibility of building a fortified settlement somewhere in the wilderness. To do so requires the concerted effort of 20 players working over time on the server and working together to maintain this safe (from zombies) area when constructed. Yes, other players can come and destroy it but the possibility of constructing something like this might encourage an uneasy alliance between a large number of players who don't know each other. Or they might end up just falling out and killing each other, but at least they have a story to tell!

Sounds good. Another idea is a "safe zone." The game turns off weapons. Players could talk/trade there with friends/strangers.

Of course there would have to be many ways in and out, to avoid ambush. Could be you could choose to spawn in there, and to get out would be a random spawn.

Never played Epoch, and wasn't talking about SA.

Just addressing KOS vis a vis player communications.

You have a good handle on this. I agree with what you've said, except from what you've said, you still KOS.

Unless it's only bandits you KOS, you're a KOS'er. Right?

My actions break down like this when I spot other players.

My team outnumbers the players I have spotted - notify others and keep an eye on the one I have spotted until they have eyes on them. Once they have eyes I switch to scanning for other possible hotiles.

My team is fewer than the other players I have spotted - notify team and prepare to lay down covering fire while they exfiltrate the area.

Vehicle incoming on my team - Notify team, have them take cover, try to keep eyes on vehicle and determine how many potential hostile are in it.

Bandit Skin - Overrides above, notify team, try to spot other hostiles while finding my shot on visible target.

Survivor skin - Normal protocols watch for suspicious actions like laying down on the hospital/firetower. Try to determine weapon and threat level. If acting hostile and carrying high threat weapon shoot first. If carrying say a shotgun/pistol, wait but keep eyes on them.

Hero skin - Little more trust here, notify team and let them reach out and make contact with hero. Watch for other hostiles.

If I get approached while on overwatch or running around alone:

1. Skin? Bandit = Shoot/Hack

2. Hero = communicate... that doesn't mean trust them, just initiate communication and be slightly wary

3. Survivor = observe, if they spot me try to make quick friendly contact but don't hesitate if they make threatening gestures to fire. Running right at me with a hatchet out is probably not a good idea. My friend had to inform someone of that after I blasted them... as the guy lay on the ground bleeding out. We bandaged him, blood bagged him, and then dropped Morphine in a loot pile in a nearby barn and got out of there while he crawled to it.

dayz give all player choice, some guys choice is snipe fresh spawn other guy choice is be medic, but is choice we all have that make experience of dayz unique ;)

except as has been shown, eventualy most of the player base becomes KoS, and then there is no game play left, its just a huge DM game..

which if thats what your looking for, there are TONS of games that do it better..

Cant end kos and it shouldn't be even if it could....end off.

What an awesome argument loaded with supporting statements as to how you came to that conclusion. I am totally convinced.

Don't be dumb ..there is no solution and iv seen you read/post in topics where iv already explained myself and reason before so why should i repeat myself over and over every time there is a new thread made when you should be  actually reading what people are writing  is previously made threads?

If you would intentionally make your own situation worse just to shoot someone then you probably qualify for the "ass" title. At that point you are simply working to make someone else's game/experience worse/harder. That is what he stated he would do.

So i guess its our fault that the game is in such crappy condition to date... what a shame. Atleast i dont KoS people with little or no gear, score for me :). You see, i have played this game too such an extent that when i die, there is no reason to go back and do the same thing i have done a million times. You must see that the reason there is so much KoS is that there is not enough to do. When im fully geared, what do i do? sit in the forrest shooting zombies? No, i go and kill people, and unless you give me a reason not too i will continiue doing it. Thats the problem of DayZ.

You can just kill bandits only instead. It's clearly harder and funnier.

Like that is easy? There is no way to know who is a bandit and who is not, except for the bandit skin which is very unreliable. I could have gotten bandit skin because i defended myself, or i could be a bandit desguised in a regular skin, who knows?

Yes, I get that. I've also mentioned it several times in other threads that when the game is too simple people get what they need and then go, "What's next?" and the default for many is to shoot other players. I've pointed out that third person view makes avoiding zombies trivial and looting easier getting people to that state sooner. I've pointed out that 24/7 servers with no night time where the risk is increased and players slowed down have allowed them to get to the point they have what they need and go, "What's next?". Oddly enough players tend to flock to those easier settings thus getting to the "What's next?" quicker.

So yes, it is players fault. They see a goal of owning the best gun and NVGs and take whatever quick route they can to that goal, hit that goal, and then are stuck with, "What's next?" and moving on to shooting others which is still easier than trying to help others or befriend others. So again, players want to take the easy route and then complain that it is the GAME'S fault they are at what they see as the end of it with nothing to do.
