Help with PROPER install instructions for STEAM

Recommended Posts

Hi.  I have gotten DayZ working on Steam before but the time has come for me to reinstall it.

I have been reading instruction pages but it takes so darn long to download/install from Steam that I want to make sure I understand this installation 100% before initiating it.

Currently I have downloaded/installed ARMA II.

I am in the process of downloading OA.

Both through Steam.

I get confused with the BETA PATCH on Steam for OA.

So far this is what I know I'm gonna do and I hope someone can fill in the blanks or correct me:

Install ARMA II

Install OA

Run ARMA II

Run OA.

Do I download/install Dayz from Steam?  Or do I do it through Commander?

When do I download/install the OA Beta Patch on Steam?

Do I even do that thru Steam or do I do it thru Commander?

Please help, this takes me hours and hour and I want to do it properly.

I am having trouble reading installation instructions.  Thanks

I'm checking that out now, Sausage.  I actually never thought to check the Steam Community forums.  Actually, now that I'm reading that, I did read that post already.

Do you know if that is correct or did you just link something?

Just wondering because it's these instructions that I'm trying to get clarification on.

Like this for example:

THINGS TO NOTE:
- Make sure all your drives are up-to-date, especially DirectX 9.
- I highly recommend the DayZ Commander.
- No matter what error you're getting, try starting Steam as administrator.
- If you're using DayZ Commander, enable the Beta Patch from the settings.

The same instructions told me to download the Beta patch through STEAM?  Now Commander?

This is why I'm confused.

download beta from commander, copy arma2oa launcher from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\Expansion\beta and paste it in arma 2 oa main folder

So on Steam, I'm NOT gonna install the 3rd option:  Arma II: Operation Arrowhead Beta.

Rather through Commander.

This is how I do it, fuck else for what I care:

Install ARMA II
Install ARMA II OA and other expansions I own

Run ARMA II

Run ARMA II OA and other expansions I own

Install ARMA II OA Beta patch

Run ARMA II OA Beta patch
Download latest DayZ mod from here: http://se1.dayz.nu/latest/1.7.7.1/%40Client-1.7.7.1-Full.rar (official server for mod dl.)

Insert all DayZ mod files to directory: Steam\SteamApps\common\Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead\@Dayz

Run ARMA II OA Beta patch again and in the Main Menu, select Expansions and enable DayZ Mod

Restart ARMA II OA Beta patch and start to enjoy DayZ while waiting for SA

Good luck :)
Edit: This is guaranteed to work in Steam. My advise, although biased, is to avoid all 3rd party crap like the plague. This includes DayZ Commander.

I'm a manual install kind of guy which sucks when it comes to Steam screenshots but I have no real complaints.   I was just helping stir the pot until one of our Steam guys pops in.  :)    I do recommend trying each method completely if possible.

Yea I have gotten it working before but I kept getting a 3gp_performance error whenever I would run the game (like right before the game loads and is still on the desktop).  However I always thought that was normal until recently people said they don't get that.

So I wiped all traces of the game off my system.

I hate the beta patch option to install on Steam.  Why can't it it just be:  ARMA II, OA, DAYZ, done.

The patch part messes me up!!

Ive always kept it 3rd party free in my end. But the automatic server start up is pretty neat.

Regardless,

The beta patch for me at least, auto updates on my end. I go in to the beta folder and replace the .exe in the main game folder with the beta patch version since they are named the same. Cant help you with folder names atm since i'm away from my PC and on a Mac.

And for the question above, It will work, as long as in your parameters you put the correct mod folder you want to use. Just like the regular version. Just with the Beta patch.

What happens if you try to launch the beta patch via steam?  I have it too but never tried that.

Launch?  I don't know.

All I know is the way I did it before was install ARMA 2, OA, then the beta all through Steam.

Then I went to commander and installed DAYZ.

That was about it.

I'm cringing at the fact that I have to deal with that OA beta patch on the Steam list again.

Half way done downloading/installing OA, then I'm at the crossroads lol

Here is, yet again, another confusing tip:

NOW BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING DONT FORGET TO LAUNCH ARMA 2, ARMA 2: OPERATION ARROWHEAD, AND ARMA 2: OPERATION ARROWHEAD BETA FROM YOUR STEAM (or retail place thingy) TO VALIDATE STUFF, AND THAT'S IT'S ALL UP AND RUNNING AND STUFF!

So, this guide is telling me to run/install it from Steam (the patch).

Dude, my tip might not be the most popular one, but it is fool-proof and I wrote it as simple as one can. If you are really having this much of hard time in installing, I suggest to try my way out.

Also about your question of beta patch size: Don't remember exactly, but something around 200 MB. So it's small. (That's what she said!)

Sausage, if you launch beta via Steam, it plays out just as if you would launch it without Steam. Nothing changes, except you can enable Steam Overlay.

Also a tip to Steam people following my advice from earlier: Add -nosplash in the startup parameters via the Game Library preferences to disable the splash screen at start. Not mandatory, saves time about 3- 5 seconds.

Hey, to save time, in case I want to reinstall again.   Can I make copies of the folders in the Steam/apps/common or whatever path they're installed to?

Basically, I install all my Steam stuff onto a 500gb portable drive.   I currently have ARMA II AND OA downloaded and installed through Steam.

I haven't touched the Beta part yet as that's the part I have stated repeatedly, I am scared of.

So could I copy the two folders and make copies?  That way, if I ever reinstall, I can just delete the messed up versions and replace with the default ARMA II and OA from scratch without downloading for 7 hours again?

Get it?

thanks

It's just to save time in case I screw up the DAYZ/beta installation from the point I'm at now.

Thanks

And Nih, I'm gonna head out for an hour but when I get back I'm gonna continue my installation.

Remember, I have downloaded/installed ARMA II and OA through Steam, and nothing else.

That is where I plan to continue when I get home.  So when you say "install Beta patch" in your steps you mean through Steam just like I installed the first 2?

Answering in order:
You can make compact images of any game you have via Steam. The function will appear when right-clicking a game in your Library. Steam will tell you how to do it and how to use it.

You can also just do what I usually do and copy the files manually, as you suggested. If you end up deleting everything, just put the folders that you had as backup into their correct places and begin installing via Steam. Instead of downloading, it will verify the files within minutes, given that they are in the correct directory.

You have download ARMA II and OA through Steam? Then, if you have any other expansions I suggest to download them as well from Steam.
After that, run ARMA II first in Steam. Then the expansions, in Steam.
Then do the remaining steps:

-Install ARMA II OA Beta patch in Steam

-Run ARMA II OA Beta patch in Steam
-Download latest DayZ mod from here:
http://se1.dayz.nu/l....7.7.1-Full.rar (official server for mod dl.)

-Insert all DayZ mod files to directory: Steam\SteamApps\common\Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead\@Dayz

-Run ARMA II OA Beta patch again in Steam and in the Main Menu, select Expansions and enable DayZ Mod

-Restart ARMA II OA Beta patch in Steam and start to enjoy DayZ while waiting for SA on Origin, trolololol

You said that you haven't downloaded or installed anything else, so I expect that SixLauncher and DayZ Commander have not been installed. If so, aforementioned steps should cut it for you.

Take note that all ARMA II related official stuff in my steps is meant to be downloaded and played through Steam.
Also, if you are going out I suppose you don't live near my time zone :) Here is a link to the French server of the same files for hopefully better dl speed: http://fr1.dayz.nu/latest/1.7.7.1/@Client-1.7.7.1-Full.rar

If you need any useless info on wth you are doing in these steps; downloading is self- explanatory and running the game just basically verifies your existing register keys. The mod and many other stuff is built so that it will expect you to have verified register keys before running appropriately.

People are telling me that I don't need to install the beta patch!!  lol  And that it is normal to get the NO ENTRY PATHNAME\file 3gp_performance

That is the main reason why I'm uninstalling so I can remove that 3gp error and maybe fix my framerate!!

Hey, I'm at the part where you say "copy the DAYZ files to steam\blahblah\OA\@DAYZ

In the zip file that you linked, there is the @DAYZ folder yes, but there is also a KEYS folder.

You didn't say anything about moving a keys folder.

So why would it be included if it's not needed?

Unless u want me to add the KEYS contents to the KEYS folder in steam\common\blahblah\OA\@DAYZ  or somewhere.

OK well, I just copied the dayz file in the KEYS folder that came with the @DAYZ files.  Obviously I moved the @DAYZ folder too.

Everything seems to be working!  And without the 3gp.performance error I always got as soon as I launch the game from desktop :)

However just a side question.

When I ran ARMA II first, it said mygamename WAS BANNED in the bottom right corner above the version # on the ARMA II main screen.

I was freaking out.  But when I closed it, ran OA first time, it installed BATTLEEYE.  And after I finished the steps, it didn't say I was banned anymore.

I suppose that's because I had no battle eye?

Anyways, seems to working good now, except my is still crap!!

lol  thank you so much for your help and I'm sure i might have a few more questions!!

Phew, well I'm glad to hear you got it working.
The people who told you not to install beta were supporters of 3rd-party programs, which I am against and thus my advice differed from theirs.

I never noticed having anything banned in my ARMA II but the fact that you installed BattlEye and it went away would suggest that that was indeed the problem. So good job resolving that one too.

Yea, BattleEye was installed when I ran OA the first time.  Which fixed that issue.

I was wondering also,  I have Steam on a portable 500gb harddrive.  If I want to change my OS, when I reinstall Steam, won't it overwrite the folder it's in now and erase all of my games in the common folder?

I just want to replace Vista with 7.  Maybe I can just run the Steam exe from the portable hdd.

But wouldn't the app need to be installed into the OS?

I'm trying to avoid redownloading/installing all of my Steam games.

This is another reason I put it on the portable hdd, so I wouldn't have to worry about this.
