Tips on cd key

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I recently tried to get back into dayz to find that my cd key has been stolen, or something of the sort. I do believe the reason is because a while ago I downloaded something, I think an fps booster, and it stole it. At least thats what I think. I have tried a couple solutions and none of them are working, so I think i'll buy a new copy. However, I don't know if the program is still on my computer and I can't afford too lose it again. I'm not sure what I should do, or if just uninstalling Arma 2 OA is enough?

Call me weird....but I'd copy all my important shit that I NEED (eg.work/school related things) and do a system restore just incase.

Do a full virus/malware scan to start off with.  If you remember what the 'fps booster' was called, try looking for that to delete it.  Although to be honest probably your best bet is to restore your PC to before the booster was installed.

Do a virus/malware scan, then go into your control panel and uninstall any programs you are unsure about. If you're still not 100% confident, backup any important things (pictures, music, etc) and reinstall your OS, successfully removing the key stealer.

If all else fails, delete your system 32.

Would you guys consider it safe if I made a new steam account, deleted arma 2 and arma 2 oa, and purchased it on the new steam?

No, the Key stealer is IN your computer.  You have to get rid of the keystealer or the next key's just gonna get stolen.

If I buy the new game is there any way I could check the key when I buy the game, so I could recover it if it gets stolen or something?

There's no real way to 'recover' a CD key once it's been stolen.  You still have the CD key, just now you and some scripter has the key, and he's probably selling it to someone else who will get that key banned.  Backup important files, wipe your computer, re install your programs, and don't install shady stuff.

If you don't get rid of the key stealer you'll just be losing another key within a few days.  And honestly you'd want to get rid of that thing anyway, no telling what else is attached to it.  Fucker probably could have all your credit card info already.

I am running a virus scan currently, and I found some shady files deleted all of them. I also looked through my list of programs, nothing shady there. And I fully removed arma 2 and arma 2 oa. I can buy a new copy on a new account right now, and the only thing related to dayz on my computer still is dayz commander. Should I buy a new copy, or is that not enough? I'm not really sure how to wipe my computer completely.. I might do that, will it make my computer run any faster?

The scan came up with nothing from what I can see, though some files were password protected. They didn't seem shady at all, though.

Nevermind, bought it again and redownloaded. and same thing again. Spent 55 bucks so far, not going to try again. Thanks, I guess.

You should have no passwored files on your system unless you put them there!

I would of formatted the harddrive to be safe =)
