Fishing

Recommended Posts

I've been searching around and havent really found a suggestion about fishing and thought I'd do it myself.

It's very simple, add a fishing rod item, maybe a bait item too, get close to any water surface (ocean, lakes, rivers etc) and make the action randomly gain different types of fish or scrap loot or whatever. I'd suggest three different kinds of fish, small, normal and big fish. You could maybe give it specific names like a Forel, Karper or Tuna or whatever. Obviously the fish size would drop different kinds of meat regenerating different amounts of blood/hunger.

Maybe you can later on also add different kinds of bait that could attract different kinds of fish with more chance, or maybe better/worse rods. I'd suggest that these rods and bait can be found close to shore buildings or something like that.

If its possible, you could even add a function where you can combine empty tin cans with cooked fish to make canned fish or something like that, but imo that would make much sense since canned food gives less blood than meat does.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this suggestion a couple of times before. It's just that the whole suggestion section is kinda messy.

Just want to add that there could also be some balance so it doesn't get too easy. For example, fishing at the shore would only get you small fish (shallow depth), fishing at a lake medium fish (medium depth),and fishing on a boat away from the shore the big ones (deep waters). And of course a big failchance on all of them. Let's say you'd need at least a couple of minutes to catch a fish, and lose your bait 4 out of 5 times approximately. Also chance to catch the fish but lose it, lose the hook along with the fish, etc. Shouldn't be as easy as find a rod>go to shore>get vast amounts of food. And now that I think about it, time of the day should be related to the failchance variables. Fishing at dawn and dusk should get you more fish than fishing any other time of day.

Has been suggested before.  Though still a good idea.  Should be more than just 'fishing pole' method of fishing as well.  There's trap lines, cage traps, net fishing, cast net fishing, ect.

If its possible, you could even add a function where you can combine empty tin cans with cooked fish to make canned fish or something like that, but imo that would make much sense since canned food gives less blood than meat does.

Canning is more than just taking an empty tin can and putting food in it.  In real life you put the food in a clean, unsealed can, put the lid on it and heat both can and food, killing any surface bacteria and cooking the food in the process, and expanding the air inside enough so that once you cover and seal the can it creates a vacuum when it cools.  Jarring would make more sense than canning as something players can do.  Basically the same concept but canning requires a lot of equipment most people won't just have laying around, much less in their backpack during a zombie apocalypse.  All you need is jars and lids, and a pot to boil them in, you can even reuse the jars unlike tincans (for the same purpose anyway).

TL;DR

Canning Requires a factory, Jarring you can do at home.

Well, there is 2 reasons you would want to fish.

For fun,

For food.

Im not sure wich of these you lean to. But i will assume its for food and say it would be easyer to set Fishing nets or use a fishing boat...

The whole rod and bait thing is not nescesary.

You could use an entrenching tool to dig for worms on grass, use worms as bait, there's like a 15% chance on getting worms per dig.

Holy hand grenades also work nice on worms.

Sorry for offtopic, couldn't resist.

This is a great idea, in a real apocalypse I think if people were looking for food they would try to fish.
