Ballistic vest/chest rig idea for standalone.

Recommended Posts

First thing I will mention is that there is no such thing as a "bulletproof" vest... however there are ballistic vests and/or plate carrier chest rigs.

Vests should not make the wearer bulletproof. If you take a round I think it should stagger you if a pistol round or knock you down (like a zed knocks you down) if a rifle round... up to say, 7.62 X 51 (.308)... larger caliber rifle rounds, the vest does not matter and you still take damage. Another fairly simple way to limit the effectiveness of such a vest is to make the plates (1 front, 1 back, both the same for simplicity's sake) a separate piece that takes damage and be replaced or possibly repaired. The vests themselves could be sort of common, but the plates fairly rare. Chest rigs could be used to carry more objects on your torso section, but without the plates would not give any other benefit other than that.

Just a thought, could be useful if implemented right. Vests could be found in a police station, prison, my house ;) etc.

Any thoughts or opinions?

there are different levels of bullet proof vest im pretty sure. police would be using maybe level 2, which would be good against 9mm and under and the military would be using type three maybe. but im not really sure.

anyway, i think there should be different levels of body armor based on the area you find it in. lower tier shit being easily broken when shot at and military grade being more resistant but rarer.

editing: but with stand alone adding in new sort of medical features you could still possibly break ribs and shit if you get shot. god knows getting shot with a 9mm and it not going though would bruise and possibly cause a break.

Yeah, I believe there are 4+ levels of ballistics protection, on top of several types of material. I had just figured one basic style for simplicity, but who knows.

Standard kevlar armor (what's commonly referred to as a "Bullet proof vest") comes in 3 readily available forms:

Normal, which is sold at intense markup to uninformed, silly consumers.

Double-weave (It has another, more impressive name) that is used by police and light duty military (MPs, patrols, etc). Not that 9mm is incredibly deadly in the first place, it can prevent 9mm from seriously wounding at close range and .45 at 20 feet. I don't know how accurate either of these previous statements are, as I've never been shot by either caliber while wearing kevlar or otherwise. I have seen fire exercises on double weave with .45 before, however, and past 10-15 feet the rig wasn't hurt incredibly.

Triple-weave is incredibly expensive but .45 won't do anything more than knock you on your ass if you're shot in the front, but it's heavy and not fun to wear (of course the only time I've worn it, it was a size too big and I bouncing around in a humvee sized for giants).

Then there's ceramic chest plate armor used by the US military (I don't know who else fields it), but don't expect the units wearing it to do much running. Or jumping. Or... moving. It's heavy as all hell and you're at more risk of knocking yourself over than a bullet doing it. I've seen people hit in the chest with water slugs at 5 feet and not feel it (water slugs are like shotgun slugs... loaded with water, I guess is the best way to explain it. It's not deadly past 5-10 feet, but it hurts like hell. It's designed for destroying explosives without setting the explosive off).

And for the millionth time, do you really think this isn't a planned feature on some level? use the search function for "Body armor" or "special clothes" and see how many hundreds of topics come up.

I'd figure since they are making a whole new system for clothing and the like. That they would be introducing something similar to this already. It sounds like a simple thing to add, being a simple damage modifier and all.

There is also AR500 plate steel, which is not as common, but is ballistic plate.

And, yes I would assume they will use some type of vests in the game.

I wonder if every civilian has one or two in his closet. Must have been from the ALDI...9.99 for a set of two.

I believe they weigh about 45 pounds. And I've seen combat engineers in the U.S. Army doing PT with them on. Pull-ups, rope climbing, etc.

yeah, but the military is trained to do that stuff. i mean i figure your character in day z is just a civilian so he doesnt have the muscle nor endurance to do that.

Yeah generally civvies wouldn't be able to do that kind of stuff.

My real MOLLE vest weighs in at about 60lbs with everything in it, that is a med bag, flashlight holders, 6 loaded AK mags, an aux. ammo pouch on back, and plates. Chest rigs are made to carry the weight on the person fairly evenly, I'm not a huge guy or anything, I do play paintball with similar gear and it isn't as bad as you'd think in real life to be honest... You get a little more tired, a little faster, but that is a given, and I am sure that point could also be incorporated into the game if need be.

It feels like 60 when you're in the sun doing PT. It's terrible. XD

Define "bullet proof" we have Kevlar vest that can stop most conventional weapons. But a large weapon like a m60 or a 50 cal sniper will go right though. The vest police wear can stop pistols and such. Then you have sh*t like EOD suits. Which can stop quite a bit *however you become immobile as heck* I don't know much about EODS though so I am not sure how much it protects you. Also the reason people only wear bullet proof vest and not full body armor is because anything that is bullet proof is usually also very heavy. So if a character wears a Kevlar tunic or whatever he should get slowed down.

And as always as you pointed out. Even if it stops the bullet you are still going to get the full impact. If its a pistol your probably just stagger back unless its a big one. If its a AKM or such you will probably get knocked over and even take some dmg *a broken rib or such*. Still better then nothing though.

I'm sure it does. But it's better than 45 pounds in a backpack. The plate carriers distribute weight more evenly rather than carrying it off your back. Which isn't even that bad (I've hiked with a 40 pound backpack).

If these types of things make it in then I would like to see armor piercing rounds to counter the people that will complain that superman has entered the game.

edit, I don't know why my text is two tone can't seem to change it.

Just a backpack? Ever toted a rucksack? It's awful. I had to go 2 miles uphill with 50 pounds of rocks + a 5 pound metal skeleton rig and kevlar type 2.

Not quite out of high school yet. Most likely to enlist in the Army or Marine Corp as an MP.

You're going to get all mountains of shit as an MP. They're probably one of the least respected parts of the military (not THE most unrespected). You're basically in charge of pissing off the drunks, and you're the only person with drinking restrictions off-duty.

Drinking restrictions won't have an affect on me. As in I don't and won't be drinking (not because I'll drink anyway). I've heard that MP's are under appreciated. I've heard that the government has been contracting out base security stateside recently. They basically can do all the infantry can do plus more.

I hadn't heard of any contracting to take MP jobs away (if that's what you're saying. Or are you saying the opposite?) But I do not drink either, but you never know what'll happen. Plenty of people swear off of drugs and just look at Lindsay Lohan or whatever the hell her name is.

Sort of. There's still MP's, but I've heard that private companies are taking over their base security. I guess they still do overseas base security, warzone base security, etc. I can't really say for sure whether that's true though. Other people can definitely influence you. No doubt about that. By psuedo I take it your a PMC?

By pseudo I mean lots of things. *wink*

Anyway: Interesting. I'd like to have the peace of mind that home base is guarded by real military, but I guess overseas does have a lot more to deal with; not as many drunk first years in the states causing a ruckus. You know how many people lost their jobs in car accidents in the 2 weeks I spent in Fort Irwin in California? 6. One guy lost a leg and an arm on his motorcycle in his first week after bootcamp. >.> The Mojave is a great place though.

Hence the reason to make chest rigs/vests one thing and the plates another... and make the plates pretty rare and able to be damaged or destroyed per say.
