Drinking from a pond or well

Yesterday while I was running around with my "thirst-icon" flashing red, I was really desperate for water.

Then I found a pond and I hoped I could drink from that.

I know you can fill your canteen with water there and then drink it, but there is no option to just drink it straight from the pond.

It would make sense that u could just fill your hands with water and drink..

Now you can only drink from a water source if you have a canteen to fill, which doesn't make alot of sense to me.

So my suggestion is, make it so that when u are near a pond or well, that u have the option to drink from it!

It could make the game easyer perhaps, but that's not the goal. The goal is to make the game more realistic :) because face it, if you are thirsty you would just drink the water with your hands ;)

I agree with this idea. My first time playing I would have survived much longer had I been able to drink from a dam I found. My water meter was blinking red and I was so relieved to see that water. Then to my shock n horror realized I wasn't able to drink it just because I didn't have a container. Its not really hard to cup your hands and drink. Apparently Arma has a mechanic where if you wade too far into water you risk losing your items.

That could be a risk reward trade off but maybe unnecessary. It's a simple act of drinking water, all you should do is put your head down and go for it. I know someone earlier said you might get sick. But whats the difference when you use a canteen? Unless I have purification tablets its not going to be any cleaner.

Everytime I am lost wandering in a low population, low wildlife, zed infested hellhole I worry intensely about water-borne contagion, don't you.

you can get all kinds of nasty things from drinking unfiltered water. But this is still a video game.

it's a good suggestion actually, but i think you should get diseases from drinking contaminated water and then the antibiotics would be useful

I wanted to add, I like the idea of being able to fill a canteen when it rains...even if it takes a while to fill.

I don't know if empty cans are reusable or not. I assume not because you can't reseal them. I sometimes come across empty whiskey bottles but they are cracked so they couldn't hold water.

I agree that from ponds and other places you can fill your canteen, it would be nice to be able to just plain drink. I actually assumed you could but recently found out that's not the case.

I think it would be a nice/realistic addition. :)

Yeah canteens aren't that easy to find, it's all about luck really. But it sucks that you can die of thirst while u are next to a pond/lake. Maybe you could add some kind of sickness with a timer.

You do realize that the same water that goes in your canteen comes from the water sources that would give you a disease? There's nothing special in the canteen to keep it from harboring bacteria.

While stagnant ponds and slow moving creeks can cause illness, large lakes, fast moving rivers, rain water, wells, water gathered by sucking plants and such are all generally safe sources. Even though there is a risk of pathogens from /some/ lakes and rivers, it's hardly much more than a day's worth of diarrhea.

Hell, if we're going to be as realistic as to put pathogens in water, why not get as realistic as allowing us to pee or put salt water in a ditch, cover it with something and catch the evaporated pure water using a can and drink it? That's to take a page from survivor man, who frequently drinks from fresh water sources, even some of them stagnant, and rarely has a survival crucial reaction more than a tummy ache.

There's no need for a balancing feature in this case: safe water in a place like charnarus is quite common. We should be able to drink from any water that isn't from the ocean or a toilet.

Another idea might be to add in the ability to use things other than a canteen, like a can of beans you've already eaten.
