Unofficial wiki: www.dayzwiki.com

Recommended Posts

I know the wonderful DayZ team plans on having an official wiki for the mod, however in the mean time, a site like this could help the beginning players.

It's pretty bare right now but if we all add some info we could probably get a pretty complete wiki until the official one is completed.

I'd help but I'm fairly new to creating/editing wiki pages and have no idea how to do the template/infobox thing. So if someone would create one or post telling how to do it, I would contribute a lot more.

I signed up and willing to help out. Although I'm not a DayZ pro (not a lot of ingame time due low server count).

I guess the first thing which needs to be done is creating templates for all kinds of stuff (eg weapons, vehicles, other items) to make a better and more understandable structure.

I can start tonight/this weekend with some structure stuff which can be used by others to easily fill out the whole wiki.

Maybe a weird idea, but it would be nice if all contributers would sign up and make changes while logged in. This way others can see who made which changes (not to mention the fantastics kudos you'll recieve!)

@Guatalian: you're right, but I guess you don't want everyone to be able to upload stuff. Maybe it's wise to have a small group of "moderators" who can do it (like us ;))

A suggestion. Don't quote Wikipedia, because it's useless! Only write down info that is relevant to the game. The Wiki is supposed to help players with the ingame elements.

I agree, although I also think some basic information is a nice addition to the wiki.

For example, at the Makarov page I added some basic information about the weapon itself. This text is from the official ARMA2 website and therefor related to the game.

To be honest; I have no idea which information to show at these pages other then useless information or spoilers.

The technical stuff will be added ofcourse, but requires some digging in the mod files...

I really don't think people should be making pages with information saying "I would..., it's best...", etc.

In my opinion wikis should be purely information and shouldn't have a personal side like a blog or guide to the game. If you disagree, I'd like to know why.

I'm not wiki expert, but on the page http://dayzwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Community_Tips_on_DayZ isn't it a bit out of the wiki spirit by reffering so many things as "In my personal experience" or "I recommend", and posting contributors in the wiki page itself?

I've also added a discussion topic, as there's a similar page which will confuse people.

I agree that the wiki only should give facts, although providing community made guides and tutorials are a warm welcome to new players.

I'm looking at the wiki now, I'm really excited to see an actual wiki for the mod. It's going to be a lot of help for some of the new players, also there's a spelling typo on the homepage under "Good to now" when it should be "Good to know".

Seems like people are just copy/pasting from the newbie survivor guide right here. That's fine as credit is given but the problem with it is, it's a lot of information to read through, never mind remember. I'm going to start to edit the information so it's easier to get to the important stuff, others should do it to, instead of uploading walls of texts.

As an 'old' wiki designer i here have some (as i see) important info for the director and the editors of the fresh new wiki.

Don't just let everybody edit as it would be killed by spam and clutter very quickly. With that said dont be afraid of making mistakes as you can easily revert to previous versions of a page.

A Wiki IS NOT a pastebin

The 'start' of a wiki is very very important (seeding the wiki) since all stuff that gets added here after, is 'build' upon the seeding.

As somebody mentioned early in this thread, its important to first make some templates for pages. So the possible many many pages have some sort of uniformity (sorry english is not my native language)

A Wikipage is NOT a HTML page!

DO NOT start thinking of a wiki page like a webpage and use common HTML code (i already see HTML tables there, even on the front page) - Instead use proper WIKI markup tags. This makes it much easier to edit pages when they are NOT cluttered with HTML tags. (No offence but this is a common error when web designers start editing wiki's)

Check this page BEFORE you start editing and find the proper WIKI tags to achieve what you want

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Contents

On pages with many lines of text it is a good idea to put a "Table Of Contents" in the top and then use the wiki markup to identify headings and sub-headings... (I'm not especially familiar with mediawiki, but wiki markups are pretty much the same across different wiki engines)

As you can read here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Formatting

You use heading formatted like this:

(level 1 is not used as it is the pagetitle)

== Level 2 ==

=== Level 3 ===

==== Level 4 ====

Etc. etc.

And as the link above also reads: An article with 4 or more headings automatically creates a table of contents.

Hmmm

When a wiki has much information then most of your time editing is NOT by adding new stuff, but re-factor data that already is there. This so the info in the wiki gets more and more efficient and clear for new readers.

(Hmmm so much for a short post here in the thread - luls)

I am contemplating if i should join the wiki or not - This i have to think more about since its a BIG task to do (when you are a 'grammar nazi' like me)

But dont forget that: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Contents is your friend.

But anyways good luck with the wiki - Maybe i join up soon or later!

cheers

/sEi

PS: A WIKI PAGE IS NOT A HTML PAGE!!!!! (use this as mantra and you will reach nirvana ;) )

Hey everyone,

good work on the wiki so far! I'm sure new players will find it very helpful. I have began adding moderators based on people who have made substantial contributions. It will continue to be able to be edited by anyone until we have a sizable amount of contributors/moderators. If you are familiar with mediawiki, are going to continue to contribute, and are passionate about dispersing information to new players to help this game and community grow, don't hesitate to pm me about becoming a mod.

@Sonicle: you're correct, however it would be unfair to modify the guides so it's not the same as the original anymore. The markup should be fixed, although it's not easy without any structure at the original pieces.

@sEi: templates are indeed a great way of normalizing stuff, however you'll need information first before you can create templates. Although the current tables (eg. at weapons) are terrible, that info can be used to extend the current weapons template.

As for HTML instead of markup; wiki's have a very limited form of markup, so HTML is required to do "special" things. The HTML at the frontpage (which I did) is something which can't be done with the standard coding, unless it's programmed to do (with custom parse functions).

However, it should be created with templates (which will include the HTML).

And with a big project like this everyone should be able to help (but limited). So you're welcome to help us out and become "the grammar nazi dayzwiki.com" ;)
