Nightime, Moonlight and Visual Adjustment to Darkness

Recommended Posts

I posted this as feedback in another thread but felt it would be better served as a suggestion.

Regarding the dark. I do enjoy the idea of having the realism of being in the woods or outdoors without electricity. However in the real world, after a period of time your eyes will adjust to the darkness, allowing you to see shapes and maneuver in the darkness.

Having spent time outdoors in the wilderness, whenever you are far from artificial light and the moon is out, the environment is actually very bright. With moonlight and adjustment to darkness you can see quite well in an environment.

I would love to see some sort of visual adjustment over time when playing at night and allow for more environmental lighting when the moon is out.

Perhaps an option would be to have an effect that allows a visual gradient that improves visual radiant light over time? If you respawn or log in, it is darkness but over a period of twenty minutes you are able to gain some visual accuity at night? I know there are other visual effects from losing blood or being knocked out. I was thinking it would be an interesting effect to have some adjustment so that you don't have 100% night blindness all the time. For someone who plays after work, this means I am forced to spend the majority of my playtime on night servers or try and find the rare server that is at daytime for my PST North America Primetime. (which means playing on EU servers with a very high ping)

Thanks!

+1 being completely blind by night is unrealistic, while having a moon cycle/cloud cover would be to much to implement imo it would be good to be able to navigate by moonlight with some difficulty

I agree. In the wilderness where there is no man made light the stars and moon are bright enough that you can see ok. The problem comes when it is moonless and cloudy but again your eyes adjust and it is never pitch black.

I think a little tinkering with the nightime is required, but we still want it to be more challenging (but easier to hide) than daytime.

Quite a good idea and makes sense, still it can't be too bright where light sources become useless during night time, it should only be light enough to see like 5 feet in front of you which then you need a light source.

Not sure if this is possible with the game engine, since they might only be able to change the overall brightness of the map and not the radius around the player.
