Possible noobish question about hatchet

So I'm playing on the newest version and came upon my first hatchet. I tried to pick it up and I got a message saying that I didn't have enough room in my inventory. I put everything I had into my bag and tried again. I dropped everything but my rifle and pistol and still couldn't pick the darn thing up.

So how do you pick up hatchets now-a-days?

Sorry if this has been asked before or if I'm just being a noob and overlooked something.

As a side note, if I manage to finally pick one up how does it work exactly? I know you can use them as weapons now as well as tools to chop down wood. How do you switch between weapon mode and tool mode?

Open inventory and right click hatcket to harvest wood or drop the hatchet.

I guess as a weapon, you just have to press fire and possible reload when you first pick it up. I had no problems picking it up, but I had big difficulties moving it from my inventory to my backpack and couldn't place it in the tent.
