Bandwidth and requirement to have private server

Recommended Posts

Basically I just have a few questions regarding having a private server.

What is the requirements for bandwidth in order to host a good server? Also is there any particular consideration for the server itself, like memory, video card if one is needed, etc.? I have 2 HPml350 G4 that can be use for that purposes.

thanks in advance

It depends on how many people you're going to have on it. Are you going to add more barracks guns vehicles. All that stuff matters. I'm afraid you just have to test yourself man, (or look at some dedi servers)

The more players the more bandwidth used, for a 40 slot server i would guess around 1.5-2TB would be enough if it was full 24/7.

ArmA is very heavy on CPU so the more cores and higher frequency the better.

RAM isn't too important and 2-4 GB will be fine.

Video card isn't needed or a sound card.

Supported operating systems are Windows 7 or Server 2008.

That will cover the bare basics, adding scripts or extra mods such as AI/NPC will eat your CPU processes and anything else you add.

I would guess enough bandwidth to support at the least 30+ players. We dont want a lag/redchain fest in your server. A very good CPU for server stuff will be best. We dont want a lag fest.

But yea, ive heard couple of TB is used up.

Start with 20 slots and work up until you know the limit, are you hosting from home or a real server in a datacenter ?

What speed is the port connection, you'll get a better idea of what the server can handle :)

Right now I have 60 down and 20 up. Will be hosted at home, But if need be I can go 175d and 175u. As for transfer I have unlimited so 2tb/mth won't be a problem.

Since I have 2 HP proliant server I just need the internet connection to be up to the demand

With only 20 (Mbit ?) up i would start with 10 slots, you could go with 20 but if they fill up you probably will see red/yellow desync chains.

Try it and see how you go :)
