Okay so I just have to ask....

Recommended Posts

Okay so i just have to ask, how the heck do we get our server populated at night, during the day we have anywhere from 10-23 peeps on the server but once it starts getting late.....the server dies down. Like tonight there isn't anyone on, just our good old friend Rott.... :) And he is on our Tavi server we have put up. So any suggestions, or any late-night gamers on, but on a server with no one on....lol? Cuz if we all just get together, then....the server wont be so lonely, and i stay up all night typically, and play games online :) So does my boyfriend :) And yes i used comic sans, sue me! I personally like it :)

Simple, Your server demographic must be in a similar time-zone to you. When it gets dark, everyone gets off.

Also; Comic Sans. I'll see you in court.

2am isn't night, it's morning. :P

Really I'd imagine it's just due to being...well...night. Most people get tired as I'd imagine it's a US server, likely drawing a US crowd. Short of a younger player base most people will want sleep at night (that sounded more dumb then it should have). There will always be a down-time unless you host a server that gets good ping in more than 1 country.

I mean real-time. If you have players playing throughout the real day, they'll get off to sleep for the real night. Just try recruiting some clans/bandit squads in a different timezone to your current players, perhaps.

Unfortunately I can't really play DayZ, but should you have a Killing Floor server I would be there in a heartbeat.

Ours is 4 hours of day and then 2 hours of night. Then the server resets :)

Ya, it is a mixture of both, younger, and older, the older ones go to bed cuz they are old lawl :P Younger ones go to bed cuz they have to LOL and there is the random few that do what they want >< But how would we go about getting a server that has good ping in more then one country, would that be like hosting a server from a VPS ? We have our minecraft like that.

Best of luck building a community of gamers, damn does it take a long time. Back when I hosted a MC server we had about 50-70 or so people, and that was after 2 years of hosting. :)

That I do, however my microphone is rather horrible. Only in that it's internal, so whenever my fan gets noisy or when I type, it picks it up.

I saw your message, you got a reply. I always reply asap so no need to wait around. :3

THere are just too many servers, not so bad. Some people should get together and only rent one. my two cents...

With the right people behind it, it can certainly take off well. :) I've been tempted to start up another MC server but I've just not had the will. Most people host so as to cater to their wants (not saying you do!), but I always hosted just to let others have fun, long as others had fun I was more than happy to pay for a server.

Sadly that's the biggest issue anymore, that and likely less players compared to a few months ago. Really having less servers would cause a bigger issue with script-kiddies, but would also have a consentrated Admin base to help with that. If it cut down to having just enough servers to fill every server on all the maps it'd likely be more fun, but every one and their dog wants a server these days. ...Course I can't say much being that I have one. I'd be willing to migrate a few small ones together, but people just don't care for it I'd imagine.

Yes i agree, but my boyfriend doesnt, he thinks it takes away from finding NVG's, But we do have Street Lights that come on at night in all towns :) that is neat i think :) Bu i do agree :)

There are just too many servers, not so bad. Some people should get together and only rent one. my two cents...

Agree, we have thought about trying to find servers to merge with, but i think that could cause some sticky situations, like we don't play the game anymore, me or my boyfriend that is, we admin but we usually greet new players, help em group up teach em if they don't know something, we don't really pvp, sometimes my boyfriend will host events with pvp, usually on the weekend. We didn't this weekend sadly because we have been working on getting the tavi server up and running. But lots of admins will just pvp with their admin abilities on which is not right, and even if they don't, and they are just playing which i have seen happen to, people cry admin abuse just cause it is a easy thing to blame :S But me and my boyfriend are the main admins, and the other 2 guys that help us out, can only spectate a player, and check there gear, to watch for hackers, if they happen to make it on our server >< We have a great anti hack program on our server. Paid a pretty penny but it is suppose to prevent the hacker from even getting past the main menu, where you hit okay/disconnect. And we haven't seen a hacker since we got it ;) Anyways point being lol, some people that run server do it to play with their powers, and do what they want when they want, it would be hard to merge with peeps like that cuz that is not how our server runs, and it get sticky when things go wrong, and everyone blames everyone

Oh, I do. It's just that I sometimes forget to do it. :/

LOL Nice :

We don't mind to much there are some guys that don't use it at all lol so :D

You can always check out our server :) we are doing it just for fun there are about 10 of us that play :) msg me if you want the info ;)

Ya like what i was saying above people run their servers how they wanna run it, and unless you find someone that runs it to your standards, it would be hard to merge with other servers :)

Well obviously no one would want to merge with someone who's a bad admin, those are the servers with no players anyways! :P

There are likely plenty of servers with a small player base and good admins that could stand to merge and make it more worthwhile. Really should be some kind of system in place to stop the new servers popping up every day. So many come and go I gave up trying to find one to stay with, hence renting one. That and there were so few vanilla servers at the time...flavor of the month had taken over by then, whether it be Tavi, or base building, or 500 vehicles, or whatever.

Honestly I just flat-out admin, its what I do...it's what I've done for years now...odd as it sounds it's what I prefer. Even if I don't play much, I'll admin a server when possible. Not so much to be 'all powerful' (though it can be fun in some games heh) but for the opportunity to help off the front lines, so to speak.

I may consider checkin' out the MC though, it's been so long since I played....so very long. Many a long nights being the sole admin of a public MC server, needed a long break.

So the question: "How can I get more people on my server, especially late at night/early morning?"

Indeed, having "two shifts" of player demographics seems to be the only realistic solution because regardless of how appealing you can make a server, the actual player has real-life work/school/body-exhaustion requirements. But what has been suggested is to somehow develop two distinct time-zones of server members to fill-up the empty server slots 'round-the-clock.

The problem with that is "ping" as players want minimal ping and typically ping is server-location based. Though perhaps there are now multi-server location solutions available to minimize ping.

Then, you should consider that players like to mingle with other players/admins who know/use the same language. So if English is yours, then your 2nd shift of "late night/early a.m. players" won't be Germans or East Europeans (as much).

But U.K. players are a healthy share of the gamers, so perhaps starting to market your server on some U.K. forums could help. Probably getting some of your non-U.S. members to act as your sales-pitch ambassadors can help pave the way too!

Someone mentioned "lack of consistancy" issues where servers disappear leaving players to have to seek out "new homes" By constant updates, and "checking in with your players to see if they need anything" (kind of like the customer service a waitress does when you're in a restaurant (the Planet F8L admins always say hello and let me know that they're there if I need any help) is crucial to building up that element of trust and longevity of the server.

Then there is the element of uniqueness and freshness of the server map: running events, keeping the bits and pieces updated, basic server housekeeping which shows players that you care.

Over time, with these varibles in place, the server should fill up nicely.

How many players do you have on your server? Have you ever thought about merging with another community? Me and my boyfriend and trying to build a gaming community :) F8LGaming, we are currently running both our dayz server and our minecraft server on a VPS, and we wanna build up and host servers on it for other games like Killing Floor, or L4D or L4D2, Ect. We just have to keep building our community :) VPS hosting is a little bit more expensive then a pre-host sadly, but it means no more red/yellow chains on our server, and gives a better playing experience. Not only that but my boyfriend now has access to all our server files, so we can alter pretty much anything. He is thinking about making bags a couple slots bigger, so in the end the Coyote Pack has 30 instead of 24 :) but with us now being on a VPS he has access to change that kinda stuff. From what i understand it is way better then a pre-host :) If you really want our minecraft info send me a pm and i can give you the ip, we are still building up the community area, where you log in, it is a little work making a minecraft server lol. I just dont want it to be confusing like some servers you log in and it is a maze to get started you read like 500 signs and just to confusing for me. LOL so i have been trying to make our spawn area, less confusing. And i agree, i admin way more then i play, and anymore i like it better, on dayz anyways. On minecraft i play. lol I dont use cheats at all, unless im helping someone to meeting someone new, which we haven't really had newbies on our server cuz i haven't really been advertising for it just yet. Like i said pm me for info :)

Thanks Jeff :) make sure to check my post for the server, were doing some big updates, we are putting all our server files, and everything on a VPS. I posted an update on the op for our server :)

Here's my 2 cents ... you have bases that are for the most part secure... peeps feel like: Hey my shit is locked up im good ... and dont log on ... If you had a tent in the woods you had to hide/protect you might "check in" with it more often... then see peeps on and say i want to play/protect/kill that peep in my tent ... But i know bases are $ for you. but thats why pop is down.
