[SA] Penumbra mechanics

Recommended Posts

Ok I know it would be a crazy adition to Standalone, but just found out about the game and thought "These mechanics would be amazing in DayZ Standalone" the ideas are endless.

So decided to bring it here and share, I'm sure people would agree on me here.

Here a basic trailer of the mechanics.

Very nice.

Because of the way DayZ is i would imagine you need your actual hands to do these things rather than use an icon.

I am very familiar with the Penumbra (And Amnesia) mechanics, and I am a massive fan of them, but I don't know if they'd work together. Penumbra/Amnesia are linear-ish survival horrors, with more emphasis on Horror than Survival. DayZ is the inverse, it's as non-linear as they come, with most focus on the Survival aspect. Those differences would mean the mechanics do not have the same sort of impact as they normally would. They were great in Penumbra and amnesia because they were woven in with other things. I could see it at least working, don't get me wrong, but would the hassle of having to do every tedious task by hand be compensated by the realism?

One such example would be the sanity mechanic. It wouldn't really work in both a thematical sense nor a mechanical one.

It wouldn't make thematical sense because the reason you start to go insane in Penumbra/amnesia upon seeing a monster is because you're always threatened with the thought that this thing could be around every corner, but he never is. You know he's somewhere, but where? So when he finally does make an appearance, it hits you like a tonne of bricks. You were never expecting it, and your erratic reaction links in with the effects of sanity loss such as blurry vision, weakness, fainting, etc. In DayZ, Zombies are littered everywhere. You know you're going to find them, you know their actions inside out, there's no reason to be afraid of them.

From a mechanical point, remember that darkness played a massive part in your sanity. They made you rely upon natural light, because the resources you needed to keep your own light was scarce. The idea of being able to get some more of it was motivation enough to go through harder and scarier paths, which was exploited by the maps to scare you further. In DayZ, it's usually either light everywhere, making it essentially useless, or dark everywhere, making it impossible to wander around without flares or a flash, because you'd be passing out every 2 minutes. The addition of there really being no reliable light sources outside of the flashlight (which is infinite and also defeats the purpose) means it really wouldn't work well.

Besides that, in Penumbra/Amnesia, you don't have access to high powered winchesters and fully automatic assault rifles.

I could use a bit more horror in DayZ, I know they cant be added to zombies that are everywhere, but making them much more dangerous will make you fear them more when they aggro or appear behind a corner by surprise or something like that.
