I still think instanced bases is the worst thing you could do to Dayz.

Some form of post apocalyptic civilization is crucial for team-play and DayZ. Are there any other workarounds/methods that would eliminate the structure and texture overload problem? If not then barricading already existing structures is the only way to go on this. Instanced bases would most likely result in an empty world as OP has stated; I used to play on a private hive that implemented "iron domes" (enemies could not enter) and that ruined my DayZ experience for a while as people just stayed in their bases because the risk was greater than the reward.

Many casual players will likely vote for no-bases because it isn't necessary for their L33t gHillE AS50 bambi-sniping haX play-style :P, whereas RP players would greatly appreciate bases/barricaded structures because it adds another layer of immersion. But in the end it all depends on Rockets view as he will make the game that he wants to make (which btw I think is awesome).

The Dead Linger, though still heavilly in alpha, has a simple barricading system where items are just moved and put up against doors, windows etc. Not sure how this would go in DayZ though.

I love Dayz for being seamless and open world, it's what makes it good, everyone sharing the same space. The worst thing you could ever do to Dayz is having all these loading screens and giving people their own space because all that happens then is everyone ends up in their own bases underground and not in the world. I'm also against these types of games that aren't seamless, I cannot play an MMO that isn't like that and that is why I haven't played one since 2005. You'll end up with what happened To EQ2 for example, no one is in the world anymore, they're all in some instance somewhere, the same happened to WoW where you might as well not have a world. I know that's to the extreme, I'm just dead against the whole idea and think as soon as it makes its way in, I'll be gone.

I'm certain, you are a little exaggerating the impact it may have. Instancing player hideouts is in my opinion the best way to go and I'm very glad that the devs made this decission. How many player are you expecting? One million, two, more? Okay, they'll not play one server only, but the space is limited. It's a huge map but not as huge to prevent crowding. I mean I've been almost everywhere on the map in a relatively short time. The world really could be larger.

What about something similar to Wasteland? Have a limited amount of resources to build a base above ground that decays with time. Linking objects (that have been placed by a player) in a certain radius together so less data to track. Give it a decay rate of say 3 days, if it's lived in then the structures around stay longer but have to be maintained to keep alive with scrap metal, wood, sand. Then if it's abandoned, the objects will vanish and be distributed around the map again.

Such a structure would just scream "raid me" all day long. It would take 3 hours or so and the whole area around that structure would be covered by snipers. Player would spend their days lookin for/after them. Nope, I wouldn't build a base which is not kick ass hidden. At least I wouldn't place anything of value in. Maybe using it as trap, but not as stash.

I am all for a base system. Barricading a building sounds fun. Though in DayZ, buildings are rather limited, the sheer amount of players who come through a server, basicly makes having such a building pointless, every one and their uncle will find it with in five hours. I play DayZ for the survival aspect. Not the CoD style of load up, run through the buildng and shoot any thing that is moving. Even if this were real life, i would never set up in a house in a city. And if I did do something that stupid, I would definantly have a dog to warn me of something amiss while I was sleeping in my shelter.

As it already is, having a tent is a liability. There are a few good places on the map where you have to be right up on the tent to find it. But any one who has played DayZ for a good minute knows where those locations are. And last I was aware of, hackers liked to use their map hack and TP to all the tents on the map. I want something I know I can work on as a project, With out logging out to only come back and find it raided. There are still a large number of players who work to make the internet bill. Not every one who plays games lives in their mothers basement while mommy pays the bills. That or have a few million sitting in the bank and live off the intrest.

When I used to play Minecraft for like 4 hours a day I would build my base either above ground really far away, or make it underground with hidden entrances. Those faction raiding servers always had you looking for ways to improve your defense. Like, pitfall traps when activated by pressure plates, all that stuff. Whenever I would find an underground base just below the surface, I would either dig them out or shoot TNT at the dirt to dig them out(claimed land is NOT at ALL going to work in standalone, not what I'm suggesting).

So, either you build aboveground bases on a very large map or go underground and add the ability to dig them out/ find the entrance.

I would really love to have some sort of houses in SA. A place where I can make an operating room or store my precious vaccines. Whether it is boarding houses up or building a shack, I would love it. Personally I believe a person should be able to board up a house or create a underground bunker. The bunker should take a lot of resources in building and take a while to complete.

DayZ Origins really nailed it for houses on their servers. It takes soo many resources to build the foundation and the actual house, which promotes teamplay (Dur, people crying about 10 man teams when the house only fits 2).

The problem with these houses is the fact that they are too safe. There is such a large number of PIN combinations that it is almost impossible to pass-lock guess. So, I'd like to be able to smash a SUV into a wall of a bandit house and get the loot, but then take damage to my vehicle.

If I was in my hero house while taking a shit and a URAL bursts through the wall, I'd want his URAL to lose a tire and knock him out while I finish reading my copy of Playzombie.

TL;DR

Board up existing houses or make discoverable bunkers underground or have aboveground houses.

It is DayZ man. If your bunker gets raided while you're fapping and you haven't set up any defense, tough luck.
