New player questions

Recommended Posts

First off. If these questions have been answered already somewhere; sorry I did look:)

1. I have been playing a non pvp start with gun server until I get the hang of the gui, every time I die I end up losing anything I might have been lucky enuf to loot before i got eaten. Is there a way to not have this happen, or is it just a 'function' of the server? The game is way hard as it is which is cool yet I can see myself becoming competent with the GUI and then not playing anymore as proggression is kinda a big part of any game for me.

2. Have no sound. Have tried the things mentioned here about steam cach/reinstal/cleaning data files etc etc. It's wierd as when I play ArmA 2 I have sound? Any 'other' sugestions?

3. Chat. What is the command to talk globally? As it would be nice to play with other's and so far no luck. Havent even seen another survivor, and last night there was 30 peeps on same time as me.

4. WOW this game is a heart pounder everysingle load.

Thanks in advance all.

1) No. You die, you lose your stuff, that's the entire point of the game. It's not easy, it's not meant to be - dying is to be avoided.

There is no progression, your progression is your life, if you die, you are done, it's not WoW, if you want to progress, don't die.

If you want to practice with weapons, go play a bit of Arma II or Arma II:OA, they have a popular 'gun range' type mode where you can practice your shot as well as the main game where you can shoot others.

2) No comment.

3) Most servers have Side Chat turned off, Side Chat is a Global Chat, use '/' while in game though.

4) Yup.

So there's no way to save gotta start from scratch every time? So when you log out for the night you can't start at same spot next time just a CR trip for any stuff u might have found? Ok I can dig that too.

Have been using / to chat. Maybe they are just ignoring the newb in the wilderness:)

Thanks for taking the time to answer my ? as best you were able.

When you log out, you keep your gear. tents/vehicles you own will likely also stay around, unless someone finds and loots or destroys them.

You only start a new character when you die.

First, welcome to hell! Second, don't KoS, and Third -for your sound... this may be stupid, but try pressing esc, options, audio options, and turning the volume up. If that's not it, check to see if your headphones are plugged in properly. If that still doesn't help, try re-downloading ArmAII

1. Yeah, if you log out alive, you will log back in at the same spot with the same gear. If you die, well you've witnessed what happens. Just see it as hardcore mode on a RPG game. You can find tents and vehicles to store stuff in, however these are on the server 24/7, so they can be looted by anyone who happens to find them, so make sure to hide them well.

2. Are you using any sort of third party chat system such as teamspeak or skype? I know some of these programs or windows itself will turn down game volume when they're open unless you change the options. That's all I can think of beyond a full re-install if you get sound out of Arma II.

3. What channel are you typing in? (i.e. what color is the text?) You need to be in side channel for the whole server to see it (teal text), direct is local area ~80 (white text), vehicle is for anyone in your current vehicle (yellow text) and I believe group is just for lobbies as far as DayZ goes (tan text). Make sure you're in the right channel, and never use your mic over side chat, you will get yelled at and probably kicked/banned from the server.

4. Just wait until you get into real servers where you start with nothing and you'll have guns pointed at you.

On the sound issue, if you use headphones when you play, don't mess with the plug. For me at least, plugging in/unplugging headphones after the game has started up makes it have no sound. Mess with the headphones before and after you play, not during. I'm not sure if this is what you're doing, but just in case...

best thing u can do to have gear after u die is to go to a server with pers loadouts but they might charge u for this but most servers start u with some kinda gun anyways look for a server thats pvp and starts u with a ak or something.

Unless you have a tent stashed with stuff somewhere else.

OP I suggest you watch some DayZ videos.

Sidestrafe played quite a bit of DayZ and I learned a TON from watching his videos. Though his videos are a bit old they should still be able to teach you quite a bit. Also watching DayZ tutorials will help even more. Especially if you're like me where you learn stuff more easily by watching and seeing than by reading.

Here is a link to Sidestrafe's DayZ series:
