Standalone balance and snipers

Recommended Posts

I see people whining about how realism needs to take a back seat for "balance". Dayz was very successful without balance and that's why I liked it and many others did too. Before guns became so plentiful I always loved those moments when you heard an anti material rifle and shit yourself. The dayz mod was intended to be a highly realistic zombie survival sim and I am all for increased realism but not for "balancing weapons" like a boring triple a shooter does. I would really not like this to become a "insert this weapons needs nerf" game like so many others. Face it, when you thought of we're to survive a zombie apocalypse, you thought Russia or near Russia due to the amount of guns and Militery items you could acquire. Why take this away and nerf weapons until we have a MLG fps game? Just my two cents and from what I can tell rocket thinks similarly to this.

Considering the setting I very much doubt .50cal rifles will be commonplace, if even in the game. In fact I think finding something that we today dont even bother picking up like a common AK74 or a M16 will be a rare and treasured moment in SA.

Gah, not this again.

The problem is not that .50 caliber rifles are "overpowered", the problem is that .50 caliber rifles are unrealistic given the setting. An M107 magazine weighs over 4 lbs. No one in a "DayZ" situation would actually carry such a rifle even if you could find it, which you wouldn't, because it's slow, it's heavy, and it's most definitely not a good all-around fighting rifle. You don't need over 10,000 ft-lbs to kill a human, you don't even need over 10,000 ft-lbs to kill an elephant. It's a rifle with a very specific military purpose.

People take out elk and other large animals in one shot at ridiculously long ranges with hunting rifles - a several-hundred pound elk is many times tougher than a measly human.

I don't see why other rifles wouldn't be a kill shot at long range provided you aimed properly, although with the current "does the same damage every time" system, that would be very problematic.

Some people just have an issue with scoped rifles in general (dey unfair!) and I dislike that viewpoint.

Never said they needed to be common place, they should be extremely rare.

You forget that due to the high militerized nature of the area, formor Militery person could easily common place, and for the weight issue: doesn't the Militery Carry all the extra ammo and weapons in vehicles around rather than carrying them? And for the damage system, dayz is its own game now and can be made with a better damage system.

I doubt the damage will be remade, too much work and too different, would be delighted if so.

Yup, the area seems quite highly militarized, but it's not the US where .50 caliber rifles are issued to troops and you have civilians owning them. Yes the military has vehicles and logistical support which gives these rifles a place, but survivors in Chernarus...

The most they'd ever have to face off against would be a few guys in a Ural, and a PKM or an AK could deal with those easily (okay, maybe a Huey, too, but I don't think the Huey should be in the game). If they wanted something for anti-vehicular purposes, or anti-building, or just "big explosion", they'd take one of the many thousands of RPG launchers you'd find in such places and some rockets to go with it.

I'd honestly rather see a Dushka on the back of a truck... it just makes more sense to me, seems more likely to be found, and if you already a vehicle capable of mounting one on, why not?

Not to say you'd never ever see any fifty-cal rifles, but they'd be so rare compared to other weapons it wouldn't be worth including, and I don't see a random hill-wandering survivor deciding to carry one if the DayZ situation was real - it's such overkill it would actually be a far, far, far worse rifle outside of specialized situations.

I don't have anything against them in terms of killing power, balancing or "unfairness" (except for the AS50 magically doing nearly 5 times as much damage as an M107, what's with that?), it's just that I find them out of place.
