etc (DayZ) 1 Posted April 20, 2013 From what I can see official servers save your items cross servers? Is this the same for vehicles? What about your position on the world?Private hive servers are just servers that have different items, rules, etc.How can you tell if a server you are on is a hive server? dayz247 59 Posted April 20, 2013 On public (official) servers the vehicle stays on the server only. What is on your body will transfer between other official (public) servers. Your position is the same on all public servers.Private servers can be modified in an infinite number of ways, including changing loot vehicles etc. What you find in private servers will only be on that private server. Most of the time public servers will have the default server name, and will have something like US2034 in the name ..... though some private servers look exactly the same as public servers in the name. It takes a lot of trial and error to find a server you like. Try both private and public servers, its all about the community in the long run......
Saethkept 134 Posted April 20, 2013 I would only add that on some private server hives your gear will carry across several private servers.

Saethkept 134 Posted April 20, 2013 Very true. For instance, DayZ.st provides "single instance" private servers where gear is unique to that one alone, and private hive servers on which gear is save across several servers.
smore98 225 Posted April 20, 2013 My theory, whether it be right or wrong:Public servers save your position, status, and gear onto the public hive, almost like a cloud. With that save data, you are allowed to switch between different servers, but what the game world holds is completely dependent on that specific server. However, your character is saved onto the hive, and can be accessed ONLY on other public servers. Private servers are community-made servers that were first developed to suffice the over-whelming amount of players on public hives, usually for clans or certain communities. However, they grew to extensive lengths to the point as being the most popular servers hives for DayZ to this day. Private hives provide custom abilities to the admins and they can change the overall condition of the game-world, the starting set-up, and even the map. Public hives were usually identified by the country initials or their location, and the server number, those some private servers adopted similar measures (e.g Balota Buddies).Private hives can usually be seen advertising the game settings and usually have custom titles. etc (DayZ) 1 Posted April 21, 2013 Thank you for the information. How are public servers hosted? By a user or by the DayZ developers?Couldn't server hosters just spawn items and go to another public server?
fluxley 2228 Posted April 21, 2013 Public servers are paid for and run by the players but they have to be registered with the DayZ dev team, and need to meet certain hardware requirements and agree to certain terms and rules (though not always enforced)A private server is also paid for and run by the players but theres no restrictions or rules, meaning they can change the mod to suit their needs, opening up the opportunity for lots of variations of DayZ.Spawning items on the public hive is strictly not allowed,
