What is ping and how do I lower it

Recommended Posts

2/5 times I get kicked for high ping. I try to choose the servers with the lowest and they are happy with me. I always thought the closer you are to the host the lower your ping will be.

Or does it have to do with how fast my internet is? Because if that is it, there is a chance I may be fucked.

Thanks

Ping is the latency between you and the server, measured in milliseconds. 40 ping = 40ms between what is actually happening on the server and what is represented on your screen. You should always try to have the lowest ping possible.

The main factors are 1) your connection and 2) how close to you the server is located. Other than shutting off anything else that may be eating up your bandwidth, getting a better connection or connecting to a server that's located closer to you there isn't a whole lot that you can do.

Ping is basically how long it takes for your computer to communicate to the host. To lower it either you or the host needs better internet.

Edit: Not only beaten but beaten with more depth and better explanation.

So if one of my close-living friends makes a server, I could be getting 10ms?

Not necessary. But yeah it is very likely you would be getting something low. (Which is one of the reasons why playing games lan is so good :))

Only just noticed i was in the trouble shooting page(went from main screen) sorry about posting.

That's doubtful. Most people with regular internet connections have a much lower upload speed than download, meaning that a server hosted by them would be pretty slow.

Even if he's in the same town as you you'd more than likely be looking at 50-100ms depending on yours and his connection speeds.

Ways to Decrease MS in ArmA:

1. upgrade from dial-up

2. get a faster router or motem (not recommended because it probably won't do much, and I don't know how to spell motem, but it'll probably come to me later)

3. check server origin, so you're not living in say the US trying to connect to an Australian server

4. close Skype, internet browser, and see if people are watching Netflix or YouTube as this can increase your MS (which is bad) drastically in some cases

5. join servers with less players in them

If I think of anything else I'll put it in this post.

As McCullins pointed out, be sure to disable any programs that access the internet in the background.

Especially video streaming and torrent downloads/uploads.

Also, this could be a stupid and obvious suggestion, but use DayZ commander and select a server from the list that shows a low ping (far right number).

You should be OK with anything under 100ms. There's a server filter in DayZ commander too.

If you suspect you have a shitier connection than what you're paying for, call your ISP and complain, or ask for help. I wasted weeks troubleshooting network issues before I finally called, to have a cable guy tell me I had a bad line filter outside. Quick swap and all was better.

I recently increased my speed look in to

1 removing/cutting the ring /bell wire

http://www.skyuser.co.uk/tutorials/how_to_remove_the_ring_wire_from_your_master_socket.html

this helped alot

I also got a smaller speed increase by moving to a ADSL compatible faceplate for NTE5

http://www.clarity.it/telecoms/adsl_faceplate.htm

the one I brought

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0030BC2PW/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

my internet is now faster and my phone-line clearer
