Decentralizing loot

Recommended Posts

This is a great game/mod. Who dont love a post apocalyptic survivor horror game? Well, i do and so do you or else you wouldnt be here. Right?

There is however some weaknesses in the core game mecanics. And the one that occupying me the most is the loot system. The way the loot system

work now basicly forces all players into two cities, namly Cherno and Elektro (and Bereziono to a lesser extend) for the absolutly essesial supplies.

Im not talking about weapons so much as medical supplies, antibiotics, blood, painkillers etc and things like matches and knives. Things you would not last very long without

if you play the game as an survivor RPG. Iv spendt quite some time roaming the country side, visiting many of the smaller towns innland for things I can use to survive and its

slim pickings to say the least. As a result I never run into other players around these towns. Wy? cos most (if not all) players a consentrated around the two, three major cities

and the two airports, making any visit there much more like playing counter strike than a zombie survivor game.

I swear, my impression after playing for a few weeks now, there must be hundreds and hundreds of players who's sole purpose it seems is to lay in wait and kill other players.

Made all that simpler by the fact that around a handfull of key buildings there are created viritual kill zones leaving the rest of this massive map uninhabitated.

I have no problem with people that love running around in Cherno, gunning down anything that moves per se, I would just avoid going downtown so to speak if I could but

I cant. I need a certain minimum of items to survive and to find them I have to go to one or two of these buildings and run the gauntlet between swats of these addolesant

killer flies (lord of the flies anyone?)

To put it simple, all I would like to see is a better spread of the resources so that not everyone would have to hug the coastline between the the big cities.

And before anyone goes all ' I dont play like that, I have a camp up north, I survive, I have resources etc' Yes, if you are part of a team, have helis and a fleet of cars etc

things a a lot easier (as it should be may I add) I more often than not play as a lone survivor or as a party of two and like the aspect of these small raids into small towns

for food and water and some shotgun ammo if Im lucky, mayby even a decent hunting rifle with a scope.Stuff like that.

The map and loot system have both been reworked for the standalone.

That's the thing though, you don't HAVE to go to the larger cities for the items you mentioned.

The reason people go to the cities is that it's centralized in one location normally (hospital) and you can stock up on a lot at once, as a downside it's a more high-priority and high-traffic area which makes it a lot more dangerous.

Bandages and Painkillers can be found anywhere and the more 'high-end' medical loot (Blood Bags and Antibiotics) can be found in any medical areas.

The whole point in these ailments (Antibiotics and other diseases in Standalone) are to force you to get treated, which WILL be dangerous but will save you in the long run.

The other supplies you mentioned (Knives, Matches etc.) are all easy to get, you can easily get them in the higher priority areas (Chernogorsk, Elektrozavodsk) but also in smaller towns like Vybor, Pustoshka and Polana, all of which have Supermarkers and are a lot more.. secluded.

mZLY'S right, in the SA loot will be spread out so that you can find loot in wrecks, in shacks, stuff like that.

a good map needs a flow. the loot system as it is in current mod actually helps shape the player traffic on the map..

people stream to the coast cities for residential supplies and to the airfields and inner-map heli crash sites for military supplies - all those supplies can be obtained outside those hotspots too but with a lesser chance. thus, a natural flow on the map exists. i think its pretty well laid out.

Cities are high risk, high reward. One good run through Cherno/Elektro and you can pretty much be fully geared with a decent weapon - if you are lucky.

After that, if you so decide, you never have to set foot in a city again.

Me though, i'm a city boy - you wont see me running through the fields with the cows - i usually prop up the Cherno pubs.

Coast monkey.

I don't like getting dirty, all that lying in the dirt isn't for me.

Give me the streets, the sights and the screaming psychotic zombies of Cherno any day.

I guess it depends on my mood. Sometimes I'll just head north straight away and see what happens. Most of the road signs I can read so it's helpful. Also...I get horrible frames in the big cities haha.
