Anti-aircraft weapon

Does no-one blow up helicopters with an RPG anymore? :( I haven't really played Arma2 aside from for DayZ (primarily because my PC hates it, seriously the engine is crap, OFP looked not much worse and runs like Usain Bolt with a hot poker up his backside) and back in the OFP days I used to enjoy swatting helicopters out of the sky with the RPG/LAW ^_^

Also, is the cockpit bullet proof on the helicopter in DayZ? You could just shoot the pilot...

Sorry guys here are some fun facts:

[*]A single Igla rocket eats up 6 inventory slots

[*]The blast radius of an Igla rocket is as big as a hand grenade

[*]Try to shoot a moving target which is more than 200 away...Good Luck!

[*]As a heli pilot you can easily aviod being shot down by flying at low altitude.

He's right. A stinger missile at worst will disable a helicopter - which might be what you're looking for, but as certain altitudes landing a disabled helicopter with minimal damage isn't tough. That aside, an AA projectile has a much better chance of knocking out a tail rotor or just inflicting repairable damage.

Stinger missiles would be more desirable on cars. They won't ANNIHILATE them like a javelin, but they'll destroy the wheels and engine block. Probably won't kill the occupants but force them to flee.

Yeah, I've shot a ton of Iglas at the huey in DayZ editor and the crew never dies. The only way to ensure the Helicopter blew up was to disable it over the trees, but even then the AI pilot managed to fly it to an open spot before crash landing most of the time.

It's really a pretty weak weapon for how much you have to carry around. It's only advantage is that it can lock on to helicopters.

Play some Ace/ACRE or Project Reality for this.

I personally love the satisfaction in watching a stinger go towards a Black Hawk. -Explosion- Black Hawk begins to lose altitude, obviously lost rudder control if not all power, spiraling downwards with all living passengers unable to do anything but watch their fate unfold before them.

This all being said, any concerted LMG/AR fire CAN bring down a slow moving chopper.

I think we have enough fire power/way to blow/destroy people and all war things in this mod...

I would really prefer to see the devs working on way to repair/fix and BUILD stuff now...

Yeah this is not BF3, and Chernarus isn't a modern warzone. In the very unlikely event that someone gets a copper working they shouldn't have to worry about every troll bandit and their mom's poping surface to air missiles at them.

I agree' date=' I wouldn't want to see the devs spend any significant amount of time on this, I just thought it would only require a few lines of code. Since the weapon is already in Arma2.

I've driven around in many ground vehicles, why haven't I been popped by "every troll bandit and their mom's" AT4 rockets?

Believe me guys, I know this isn't BF3/PR, and I use the crap out of AA in those two games. And the last thing I want to do is turn DayZ into a PVP match, but we've already got so much military hardware in the game I doubt adding an AA missile will push it over the edge.

Think about this for a second, if you have a working helicopter, it would be very easy to collect a bunch of spare parts for it. It's not like the people flying around in helicopters are struggling to survive, they've made it, they're thriving. So you leave your spare helicopter parts in the helicopter and when you get shot down, you secure the crash site and repair the bird. If it was just one lone guy hiding in a bush who shot you down, you just repair and fly away. But, if it was another clan/group who wanted your chopper they could advance and try to kill you before you can get it repaired.

We already have anti-air weapons. They're called bullets, with the occasional M136 showing up to punch the sky.

Going by that logic... why do we have a winchester AND a double barreled shotgun? Or M4a1/M4a3/aks/akm/ak kobra? WHY?!?!

How about we get rid of all the guns except for the m1911? That way people would know this isn't BF3.

This strawman in no way mitigates how stupid and out of place a Javelin or AA gun would be in Day Z.

These arent stupid suggestions but really weve got weapons covered right now. Then again, this would take zero effort probably and sure why not have a chance for every single weapon that exists in Arma2

I didn't ask for the Javelin, just the Russian made Igla.

I just can't really understand your point of view on this. Do you also think the rocket launchers, military sniper rifles, grenade launchers & sachel charges are stupid and out of place? If not, why are they fine but not anti-air?

Edit: related question, does anyone know if the AT4 is a side arm or primary? I know in Arma2 it's a secondary but wasn't sure if this was changed for DayZ. In other words can you carry a rifle and the at4?

I mean maybe one of the military areas would have one stored away like the rare M136 but then again where's the point of adding another rocket launcher? the Chopper is the most difficult vehicle to repair so why give it another way to be destroyed, we should be focused on smoothing gameplay and adding more things to be fixed/built instead of adding a weapon which only purpose is to take down choppers.

Of course they wouldn't use AA against infected, nor would they use AT. But, I'm sure there are AA systems in Russian military bases. Same place the SVD & AK's came from.

The chopper is also the easiest vehicle in the game to hide, and arguably the best vehicle. And it's the only vehicle with mounted weapons. The way ARMAs netcode is, I can't imagine trying to hit a moving chopper with bullets unless it was hovering above me. Not to mention all the firing is going to attract lots of infected, something the helicopter doesn't have to worry about.

DayZ is supposed to be ruthlessly hard, why do you guys want the chopper to be some kind of flying "safe" zone?

Choppers fly in slow, predictable flight paths. The only time you should have difficulty hitting one with bullets is if it's doing a high-altitude run, at which point it isn't really affecting you, or if it's buzzing a clearing at high speeds, at which point you should probably just get into the trees.

High-speed attack runs need to be lined up from a distance, and can only be done on obvious, easily visible targets. Helicopters engaged in low-speed hunting runs or that are hovering are quite easy to hit unless they're unusually high up; in that case, being high up benefits you more than them anyway, because you're a smaller target with lots of cover and a planet to blend in to.

Why do they have to affect me in order to be vulnerable? This IS a survival game. I wasn't saying a helicopter is a flying death machine, rather it's a flying safe room. If you play it smart you should never lose a helicopter in DayZ right now. I feel that's unacceptable in the spirit of the game.
