DayZ fps anomaly

Recommended Posts

I've been playing DayZ for over a month and a half now. So far so good. LOVING this mod. Although I do have an issue, yeah, the classic low FPS issue is somewhat still present, *currently upgrading my card, from a Nvidia Geforce 555m, to a better GTX model, seeing which one fits my m14x.*

But I wasn't bothered much since I got 30+ fps, with the classic 20-25 fps in towns .

To fix this I used the force 3D via DayZcommander, and my FPS was boosted quite a bit *I gained around 10 -15 frames*, also editing the GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1; GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=1; as many people have mentioned in some posts.

But recently I've been suffering random FPS drops all over the place. As soon as I play DayZ, I start running around a bit, my FPS drops from 40 to 10 for about 3 seconds, and the process repeats every 10-15 seconds. Almost unplayable.

I have what I consider a decent laptop. Speccs:

Alienware M14x, 8 GB RAM, i7, Windows 7, Nvidia GEforce 555m (with all drivers up to date), and all DayZ updates via DayZcommander.

I can play other games at max graphics (skyrim, asc3, darksiders2, to name a few with 60+ fps without any drops whatsoever. I also play a few MMO's and those run fine as well.)

Any ideas?

Thanks!

It goes into power saver mode. Use your drivers to set Arma 2 to high performance.

I'm using my Nvidia control panel, everything is set to high performance, all settings are to maximize performance. Is that what you're refering to?

Yes. It could be your CPU or GPU overheating.

That's been my suspicion. But what I can't figure out is why only in DayZ and not in other games? I do own an alienware, and they are quite known to overheat.

Not sure if it has a ssd or hdd but if it's a hdd in the laptop try to defrag your drive. Worked for me a few times few years back.

I'm not sure a fragmented harddrives are an issues these days, the OS tends to keep on top of it automatically.... someone debunk me if I'm wrong.

My guess is that it's because Arma is one of the most CPU intensive games ever made.

Yeah, I have read that all over the place. I think it has something to do with all the physics it needs to calculate for all the tiny parts in the game... bullets, finger bones and stuff.

I have an FX-4100 and the rarely pushes my CPU above 60%

I am thinking about upgrading my CPU and I was just gonna go all out and buy a 3rd gen i7 but after reading loads and loads of reviews about the 2nd & 3rd gen i7 and the FX-8150(i think that is the right number for the FX 8core) the performance hit is quite minimal for the purposes I would be using it, with the only real hit being noticed if I am live streaming/encoding videos.

Can anyone with a 2nd or 3rd gen i7 or FX-8150 report on its performance in game? - I know a lot of it will be to do with the GPU as well but I'm just trying to build up a rough picture.

I'd be saving £100 on the CPU + ~£50 on the mobo by keeping the AM3+ socket for the FX range
