character not saved

So I played this game for a while over the summer, but had to stop because I got bogged down with work. Well I've recently started playing again and it would seem my character didn't save between servers. I stopped playing last night in a deerstand, and when I logged into a different server just now I am back on the beach with a different starting loadout. Do I need to sign into the same server from now on? Or did I do something wrong and it didn't save? Any help is appreciated.

You can move between any public hive servers.

Private hives your character will only remain on that server.

In DayZCommander you can tick "hide unofficial" if you only want to play on public hive servers, however the vast majority are private hives nowadays.
