No. The color is what channel you typing in.

Yellow is group or vehicle chat, I don't remember which.

White is direct, AKA everyone NEAR you

Blue is Side chat, which is everyone on the server.

Press the < or > keys until your writing is blue and everyone will hear you.

Hello there

Vanilla Arma comes with different chat channels.

I use , and . to change them your config may differ.

If you are chatting in yellow then that is usually the Vehicle Chat.

Blue is the Side Chat

And white is either the Direct Chat or Global Chat.

To hear you in the vehicle chat you need to be in the same vehicle as others.

Side chat will talk to all on your faction and Global talks to everyone no matter the faction.

Direct chat is distance based and only those near you will be able to hear you. But any faction can hear.

Just to add.

If you start typing and notice you're in the wrong channel (I do it all the time), you can use the up/down arrows to switch.

Lol, I didn't know that. xD

No,

yellow is group chat. I'm almost certain you're typing on this channel because

1) It is the default channel when joining a server.

2) You did not switch channels for sake of not knowing how.

Group chat is a dull yellow, and vehicle chat is more of a bright almost-orange.

Dull blue is global chat, and near-cyan is side chat.

White chat is direct chat.

I think I got all the chat channels.

Communication

A multiplayer game can get a lot more fun and tactical when you can communicate with the other players. ArmA offers players several tools to do this without needing to use external applications.

Channels

The game uses several different communication channels to make sure you don't get overwhelmed.

  • 'Global channel' - every single player in a session can hear each other using the global channel.
  • 'Side channel' - only players on the same side can hear you in this channel.
  • 'Group channel' - all members of your squad are on this channel.
  • 'Vehicle channel' - everyone on your vehicle's intercom can use this channel.
  • 'Direct communication' - no radio is used here, so only players within voice range will receive these messages.

To switch to another channel press either '.' (colon) or ',' (comma).

Text chat

One method of communicating is sending and receiving text messages. To start typing a message, press '/' (forward slash). Now you will see the message box in which you can type you message and send it by hitting 'Enter'.

While typing a message you need to use 'Up' and 'Down' to change channels, instead of the normal ',' (comma) and '.' (full stop).

Green?

That's the most fucked up shade of green I've seen. If it said it was yellow-green, I might accept it, but it's a damn faded yellow, so...

Can someone tell me more or less the maximum distance between players in direct communication? Is it also affected by buildings?

It's 40 mtres radius - should be regardless of buildings

It's green in the ArmA 3 Alpha. Most likely it was intended to be green, is just failzorz.

........that's because your cousin is colour blind Coke...same as some of the posters evidently are on this thread.

But if you were color blind would wont their green be thought of as the same thing as our green?

I blame monitor/tv calibration.

You may well be right orlok......but I know somebody who's colour blind and sees green dogs and brown grass 'sometimes' but not always - it depends on the particular shade.

If you are right then the rest of their graphics foliage colours etc are probably wrong, so they are likely seeing a different dayz zone to the rest of us

Color is based on perception because theoretically, "color doesn't exist". Color is visible light that gets reflected off a surface, so we identify them as such. Basically, everyone is seeing the same color, but how we perceive it is different, in the much same way as chicken tastes the same to everyone with tastebuds, but some people just don't like the taste of chicken.

Shades of blue and navy blue, or periwinkle, or navy blue compared to black, and such other things.

Is it tan or is it vanilla colored?

Is it gray or is it black?

It all depends on how we perceive the color.

"Colorblind" folks can't percieve color. They can see it, but they cannot identify the differences. It's like seeing a pencil and a pen and not knowing the difference, not being able to tell.

So the channel colors are what they are, and there's no way to really prove what color they are, because you could be wrong, and you can't prove that it is that color, since it's all based on perception. You just have to give a general idea of what it is.

At that point it's just communicating on what is most understandable to whomever is receiving the information.
