How to start?

I'm extremely new to DayZ. Haven't even gotten to play yet.

Reason being, I can't figure out how. I'm positive that this is a great mod for Arma. If I could get it to work. I go to create a new server/game (not paid...don't even know what that stuff is about), and all I want to do is create a regular game. Zombie survival. Other people you have to watch out for as well. Nothing special. How do I do that?

I don't want to have to pay for the server or anything like that. I paid for the game, I should be able to play the free mod for free.

Coming from a very confused and frustrated noobie.

Unless you are really into making your own server, just join one of the thousands that already exist.

You only have to pay for a server if you purchase/rent/or run your own. All of the DayZ servers you find are completely free (or 99.99% of them)

The game isn't single player, and that is why you can't create your own.

That's the problem. I've tried joining other servers. A) I never know what server to join, and B) The ones I've tried that seem to work the most say something about waiting until my player is setup.

You can play for free. Download DayZ Commander (for free) and then choose from one of the thousands of free servers available.

You should only be looking at setting up your own server if you're knowledgable about that sort of thing and have a lot of free time on your hands, it's hard work.

It's just a third party server browser. Try it, you won't look back.

later if you do want to just play by yourself there are ways you can start a server from your computer, though it's really boring
