madmega 16 Posted March 7, 2013 (edited) So i was playing a custom mission in OA and i had terrible fps so i turned down the graphics, just for testing i switched on the preset video settings to very low, and to my surprise i got over 50 fps, and the only thing i could think of that made the HUGE difference ( from 5 fps to 50+ ) was the video memory setting ( i had it on default as every other performance guide tells you ). So i started too tune up the video settings to similar what i had before ( high/very high ) except this time i used video memory on very high, then started the counterattack scenario ( elektro combat ) and pouff! i got 30-40+ fps in elektro with a lot of shit going on! One other thing that i used was a startup option called -maxVRAM=x (i have 1gb so i just set it too 1000). i used to have 10-15 fps on this very mission and now i have more then doubled it!So basically just use that launch option and then set the video memory too default and you should get ( like i got ) a HUGE FPS increase!sorry for incorrect spelling and so on, english is not my native language plus been up all night enjoying my fps increase!EDIT: Found another way too possibly increase performance when i was looking at some arma 3 performance tips, have a look at this http://www.coderbag.com/Programming-C/Disable-CPU-Core-Parking-Utility. worked really good for me, gave me a 10-15 fps increase in arma 3 Edited March 15, 2013 by Mad mega
Mos1ey 6301 Posted March 7, 2013 If you have 1Gb of VRAM you should actually be using -maxVRAM=1024, for 2Gb -maxVRAM=2047.Also, this isn't a suggestion, lol.
madmega 16 Posted March 7, 2013 Saw that launch options on BIS forum and he said to put it like 10 mb under so i just set it to 1000. Yea kinda had that figured but didnt know where else to put it
Mos1ey 6301 Posted March 7, 2013 I'm not sure why you'd want to use less than the full amount of your graphics memory. :S
madmega 16 Posted March 7, 2013 Im just doing like that guy wrote on the BIS forum and as far as i know they play ArmA 2 which they probably have been doing for a while now AND they probably know more then us IBoughtArma2Just2PlayDayz players
madmega 16 Posted March 7, 2013 But instead of just letting me know what you think i do wrong, why dont you try it? A comfirmation from a forum teamie is always positive
Mos1ey 6301 Posted March 7, 2013 I've been using -maxvram=2047 for as long as I can remember, make sure you use -cpucount=X -exthreads=X and -maxmem=2047 as well (2047mb is the hard-coded maximum and I think everyone has more than 2Gb RAM these days) to make sure that all your hardware is properly detected or there isn't much point. madmega 16 Posted March 7, 2013 Yea ofc i use them all :)
madmega 16 Posted March 7, 2013 But havent seen a difference until i switched to very high video memory
Mos1ey 6301 Posted March 7, 2013 I believe setting it to 'very high' is the same as using -maxvram=512, so I'm not sure why that would cause you to see an improvement in FPS. :S
madmega 16 Posted March 7, 2013 I did not code real virtuality 2 or 3 or whatever so i cant tell, BUT it did give me huge performance lift
madmega 16 Posted March 7, 2013 18 fps avg with default video memory on Arrowheads benchmark, 52 with very high
madmega 16 Posted March 7, 2013 (edited) But now i actually think i just have a problem elsewhere, dont know where that might be though. But if someone else getting terrible frames, you can atleast try this Edited March 7, 2013 by Mad mega

toxicsludge 406 Posted March 7, 2013 OR you could just get a bigger memory Video card....Sometimes people don't have money to throw away on another video card.
dgeesio 1034 Posted March 7, 2013 the best tips for performance is just buy a modern pc no voodoo magic is going to transform your pc or performance in arma 2 or arma 3.you need a modren card and a very fast cpu to get the best out of it.
aussiestig 681 Posted March 7, 2013 Saw that launch options on BIS forum and he said to put it like 10 mb under so i just set it to 1000. Yea kinda had that figured but didnt know where else to put itYou're getting this totally confused with "GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1000" in your Arma 2 cfg file. Set your vram to the max in your launch options, not ten, and set your "GPU_MaxFramesAhead" to 1.
Pariah_ 4 Posted March 7, 2013 (edited) I believe setting it to 'very high' is the same as using -maxvram=512,....oh crap... really? ugh... ive got a 2gb nvidia... yeeeeaaaaahhhhh ima gonna have to change that, i didnt get that memo.. <_<ok so I didnt find anything on the maxvram 512 on very high but I did find where 2047 is the soft-coded max for the game (maxmem is also 2047), http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma2:_Startup_Parameters so might as well just put in 2047 on the launch options just to make sure Edited March 7, 2013 by Pariah_

OrLoK 16186 Posted March 7, 2013 Hello thereA2 is an odd beast indeed.Tweaking is the order of the day with this game.Try these for a starthttp://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma2:_Startup_ParametersRgdsL
dulix11 731 Posted March 8, 2013 My shitty computer has about 350gb HDD, 2GB RAM and a 4850 Raedon graphics card....so I'm kinda used to playing on these settings.Even ArmA III runs at about 10-15 fps on low everything. It is only just, JUST, playable. Firefights are hard to play in though, I'm afraid my computer will explode. The good news is I'm saving for something that can run it on just normal or high at least. madmega 16 Posted March 8, 2013 To make one thing clear, i have been playing arma and days since june last year, low frame rates isn't something new for me, have probably looked at every performance guide there is for arma 2 and days. Recently bought a 7850 1gb edition (OCed) for you who said something about a modern card, have a i3 550 3.20 and 8gb ram clocked at 1600 so my computer isn't really medieval old. And i know my cpu isn't the best not even close.

madmega 16 Posted March 9, 2013 This is what worked better for me, but i believe now theres a problem for me running the game with default, this will probably only work for those with the same problem, extremely low fps with decent computer components. Also have done some testing with other tweaks such as the CpuCount, MaxMem, MaxVRAM, exThreads, configuring the .cfg files ( framesAhead, and that other one ) NONE of those tweaks gave me a single fps increase or decrease, doesn't have to mean something but there it is.
