hi there

I say its nearly impossible to build anything better than laptop with taht budget unfortunately. but instaed of buying new hardware, you can go for used computer parts or computers.

look for a p45 motherboard, intel c2quad cpu (any cpu from q9xxx series), ddr2 ram (4gb ideal), hd5850 gpu. you gotta take your time and look for something similar to what I described.ebay, hardware forums, computer shops near at your town etc..if you are lucky enough to find a used system like this, you will be able to play games better than any laptop, and cheap than buying new hardware.

You might wanna watch jack frags tutorial about how to build your own steam-box.

He aims at £300, and also includes where to get the hardware. If you look on ebay or have your own case you can use, you might make it close to 250.

Just don't save money on the graphics. they are currently the most important component.

Go used. You can find yourself an ok AMD quad-core system, then

slap in a slightly used Video Card. Herein Canada, I can find online classified ads for in-box Radeon HD 6850s for $60 US.

Your budget is doable, even for a well-performing gaming system. You just need to invest the time to hunt for the right used stuff.

6GB of 1600Mhz Kingston Hyper X DDR3 Ram

2x 500GB 7200rpm 64mb HDD = 1TB or 1000GB

USB 3 / SATA 3 Gygabite Motherboard (cant remember model)

yes that rig is perfect for your expectations but one question: what resolution you will be gaming on? if its 1080p, that 7770 won't cut it but you will be fine if its like 1280x720 or 1600x900 res - with high details in most games. also 2x 500gb hdd is good for raid-0 setup. its cheap yet performance between ssd and hdd. very good.

Well, it also depends on what type of 500W power supply it is. You don't want to fry your new components.

Not that it matters much, but if you want optimal performance it's recommended to have RAM as a multiple of the cores you have.

2GB per core is in general a good rule of thumb.

As most games only adress 4GB Ram and some even don't use all the cpu-cores, it won't matter with most games, but if you want to get the best performance out of what you got, I'd recommend to upgrade to 8GB Ram for performance or reduce to 4GB for price issues, as 6GB is difficult to be evenly spread on 4 CPUs, reducing the total max your PC will achieve. (just to be clear: I'd recommend 8GB )

I purchased a Core Quad 2.5ghz Q8300 with 4gb of ram and a gtx 460 1gb for £130 its not the best but it runs the latest games pretty well. Ebay might be your friend.. just dont get ripped off ;)
