hatfieldcw 184 Posted February 26, 2013 (edited) You're running 30km a day and living on Coke and canned pasta. A smoke a day won't turn you into an invalid, and if you're worried about cancer in DayZ, you're not playing right. If I don't have matches, I'll cook my mutton over a burning oil barrel and eat it. I'm guessing that's worse than cigarette smoke. How about all that gunsmoke we inhale? I know I always wash my hands after shooting before I eat anything, to get the lead and cordite residue off my fingers, since it's poisonous. A guy who kills five undead horrors with a revolver, then five more with a hatchet, then sits out and scoops beans out of a can with his fingers is going to be eating some grody stuff.Cigarettes would be a cosmetic touch, like the cigar or chaw is Soldat. No need to get upset about possible health risks, except that the ESRB splash for DayZ will have to include "Use of Tobacco" among the reasons it's rated M for mature. Uuni 74 Posted February 26, 2013 Adds in to character customization so IMO they should add this. Gives us something to do and keeps us occupied while on watch duty
Raged 187 Posted February 27, 2013 (edited) I think the whole point of the OP was to acknowledge that the animation is lacking a key element and it needs to be fixed/removed.My opinion is that ultimately it should be removed, unless the animation is removed initially, and only available when the [pack of cigarettes] ITEM is acquired. People arguing for the long-term effects are taking it to seriously, IE (50% stamina redux, cancer over time, etc.).This is a game where we will literally be worrying about the daily need of finding a hole in which to shit. There is no time frame that will occur in this game that you can expect to see long-term effects of smoking tobacco and it's ramifications. If you guys want to start talking about using other 'addictive substances' like say, Mr. Methamphetamine, then I'm onboard for near instantaneous effects  Edited February 27, 2013 by Raged
Hockeyguy 107 Posted February 27, 2013 This is cool idea and there does need to be something to do when you are sitting down other than just looking around thinking what your next move is. Great idea. :)
shadowleaper 22 Posted February 27, 2013 I think if you have a ghillie on you shouldn't be able to smoke because in reality snipers are told to never smoke since their smoke trails can be seen by other snipers/scouts etc.
thesodesa 99 Posted February 27, 2013 (edited) I think if you have a ghillie on you shouldn't be able to smoke because in reality snipers are told to never smoke since their smoke trails can be seen by other snipers/scouts etc.Just because they are told to refrain form smoking doesn't mean they can't, and that's the point. We're not in the military here, so why should the game restrict you from doing something stupid that might get you killed. It'd be your own fault and you might actually learn something in the process. Forcing people to think and not holding their hand every step of the way can be a very positive thing Edited February 27, 2013 by TheSodesa
Karnesh 21 Posted February 27, 2013 (edited) i'm all in for an additional mojo-meter filled up with smoking cigs and consuming alcohol ;)my idea for nicotine would be very subtle - less appetitemeaning your food-meter decreases a little bit slower after a cig.andas mentioned with eating stuff consecutively, there sould be a natural barrierIf you smoke too much cigs you start to vomitAnd heavy coughing like you do when you are infected.I think if you have a ghillie on you shouldn't be able to smoke because in reality snipers are told to never smoke since their smoke trails can be seen by other snipers/scouts etc.And who said everyone using a ghillie in a post-apocalyptic world is a trained professional sniper? Surviors are likely to be special forces as they know how to survive better than the ordinary man, but an ordinary man can also survive based on dedication and playing it smart and safe. I wear i ghillie ingame when im in the forest, i do not carry a sniper, i carry a mk48 mod 0 (atm) which i never use unless it's in self-defence. tommes 331 Posted February 27, 2013 I want cuban cigars or a Gandalf's pipe! I'd kill for it. And a nice single malt along with it. Vodka would do as well. It's not survival without a little vice.
slivniku@gmail.com 93 Posted February 27, 2013 And heavy coughing like you do when you are infected.? mild coughing occasionally maybe, everything else is overkill, you really should start smoking to observe and appropriately measure all the effects ;)
Karnesh 21 Posted February 27, 2013 Hmm i can't say that the infected cough is that bad? Maybe i just have'nt been infected long enough, but i only coughed a little when i ran from black lake to berezino. And i used to smoke, so i know how it works, but i digress, apologies. :)
slivniku@gmail.com 93 Posted February 27, 2013 with lack of other sounds the coughing is unmistakable, and also quite constant...The way I see smoking in dayz it is not as much about having pros and cons, more about character appearance/imagethat said, if my char found anything smokable he'd look like a chimney ;)
mr_chabowski@live.co.uk 2416 Posted February 28, 2013 Smoking should definitely have some consequences, not just for the smoker, but for the people who spend a lot of time around the smoker when he smokes as well. Just make the effects build up slowly over time as more smoke is inhaled. If we're basing in-game effects on propaganda, then I propse any can of Coke you drink should rot your teeth out of your head. When you eat only beef/pork you'd get too fat to run. If you eat nothing but beans for weeks at a time, you won't be able to hold in a shit with both hands. There are more urgent problems which would arise from our DayZ lifestyle than possibly eventually maybe lung-cancer or heart-disease. You simply won't live long enough. If I'd never smoked, I might have more stamina than I do now, but anyone else who doesn't smoke isn't automatically more physically fit than I am. That's an illogical assumption to be making.

joe_mcentire 2074 Posted March 1, 2013 no matter what...but like toiletpaper right at the moment: add them into the game, let's see what will happen, yet without any real purpose...
applejaxc 2500 Posted March 13, 2013 I think I know the animation you're talking about. I thought he was yawning or something. The whole point of adding smoking is that it adds a personal touch to you character. Who the hell would take a smoke break while running from zeds? Have you never spent time sitting around a camp fire with friends just talking?By that logic, why should we be able to choose what our characters look like? it doesn't affect our ability to survive. Putting sunglasses on your character doesn't reduce the glare, it just makes them look like a Bro wanna-be. What's the point of being able to sit? your character doesn't actually become more rested, and who's going to sit while running from zombies? That would break immersion! It sounds to me like someone took health class a little to seriously. Smoking doesn't instantly riddle your body with cancer and you don't start wheezing on short walks. What crap is this about smoking burning your lungs like acid and reducing your stamina? Hell I was doing 14 mile trail runs in two hours back when I used to smoke half a pack a day and had for years. I've since quit smoking but it wasn't until i became less physically active that my stamina started to decline. Hell, my Grandpa smoked like a chimney for fifty years and he's still going strong at 92. Well, as strong as a 92 year old can.Besides, whose character lives long enough that they would need to worry about cancer. You are the first man to receive my beans. Use them well. Roark92 90 Posted March 13, 2013 (edited) lawl at all the ridiculously health conscious people in this thread...smoking is bad we know but holy **** come on it isnt the devil incarnate.your char. spends his days running from building to building scrounging basic necessities in order to survive, when they arent looking over their shoulder at a train of 20 zombies they are dodging bullet fire from an unfriendly chap in a tower.do you HONESTLY believe that in this world... when a character FINALLY has a moment of peace to desperately try to reclaim the sanity that the day has stripped of them, that they will look at a pack of smokes and say,"oh no, id better not... those are habit-forming and i might not see my 75th birthday."no way, id add cigarettes onto my list of scroungables for sure. food, water, clothes, tools, cigs and booze.some say bad way to survive, i say theres more to surviving than just eating and shitting. one has to be able to find pleasure in it as well, however they can. (probably what breeds so many sociopathic bandits lol)to be honest i dont smoke, and i dont like too. but in this scenario i think id indulge from time to time for sure.EDIT: and about what it should "do" in game...probably nothing, play the animation and leave it at that. people will make good use of it socially anyways, no need to attach a hard stat to it. HashSlingingSlasher192 29 Posted March 13, 2013 (edited) I don't see why you'd ever want to smoke, especially in a game where you might not yet be addicted. It has only negative effects and reduces your stamina and sense of taste and smell. Why smoke?well given your estimated lifespan in dayz the pros outway the cons Edited March 13, 2013 by HashSlingingSlasher192
