Dynamic Heli/Plane Crashes

Recommended Posts

I dont know if this has been suggested before, but its something I would love to see in the standalone.

Basically Helis and Planes crash while the server is running. As time passes, helicopters and planes crash randomly on the map, mostly on fields and open areas in cities (Because the pilot would try to land it safely). The helicopter/plane will spawn, and fly 1 minute with something smoking/burning in it, and there will be a radio transmission that all players with radios can hear. The radio transmissions would be pilots asking for help, and reporting their coordinates.

After 1 minute, the plane/heli will crash, resulting in a slide, it burning and the pilots being dead. This will attract zombies, and zombies will spawn either in the city if the heli/plane crashes there, or come from the forest, if the heli/plane crashes on a field. Players can go and loot the heli/chopper, but quickly before the zombies get there. If its too late, the players will have to eliminate the zombies. The helis will often have quite valuable gear, such as medical supplies, maybe some sort of document about the zombie virus so that you can learn the story a bit, and if its a military helicopter, good military gear. Players would have to risk their items and lives to get these, because of other players wanting the gear and the high amount of zombies, but the gear is worth it

This would give the radio a purpose in DayZ. Basically, the heli and plane crashes will happen occasionally, it will get reported on radio, players have to find the coordinate on the map/gps, and then hope there are no other players/low amount of zombies near the heli/plane.

Oh, and a nice way to stop the frustration most players get when they realize a heli/plane crash site has been looted, is to end the fire when the heli/plane has been looted. This will help players know if a heli/plane crash site has been looted or not. So, when all the valuable items has been taken from the crash site, it will stop burning, and there will just be the wreckage of the plane or heli.

events like this have been discussed a lot, personaly i dont like the idea. I admit its awsome watching helicopter and plane (in wastland) crashes but i think i would like to see plane crashes spawned in like helicopter crashes are now but more rare.

See, adding the actual crash in is good and it will alert nearby players. I don't like the radio thing because

a) not all players would have radios

B) I don't like how it announces this information to everyone. It would push a lot of players into doing things, when most events should be more player-driven.

Seems like a good idea, but the radio broadcast should not have clear coordinates. Just the info that there is a heli- or planecrash could be enough, or maybe give very rough information such as "We're a Huey at 03/09*, attempting an emergency landing soon!" in the side chat. Then the Huey crashes somewhere around the given position, but not often directly in the given coordinates. Maybe a bit further away. Plane crashes would be far further off.

One idea is also that the chopper/plane landing was (at leat almost) a success, but the crew didn't manage to escape the zeds, and they're laying dead next to the damaged but repairable chopper, and the zed are eating them. This would be rare, and the crew would have camo suits, radios and such as loot.

Yep. I like the idea, as hard as it is to implement into the game.

I vote with The_Burndown when he mentions rough estimates for map coordinates. I also like the radio thing, it adds flavour to the game. This could be done tastefully I believe.

Something at the back of my head is screaming 'Massive load on server!', but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Indeed. Your idea is great in my opinion, but then again, read the above quote.
