Sliv 1 Posted February 15, 2013 (edited) Hi guys.So today I had a blast roaming the countryside and exploring some ruins and buildings. While I didn't find many interesting things I did like the slight progress I was making. However, at some point, the server automatically shut down and I wasn't able to find it again. (I forgot to write down the information on the server) When I tried joining a different server, it seemed like my progress was lost. Is your progress tied to the server you play on? Is there any way to transfer your progress to another server? If not, is it possible to progress in two different servers simultaneously? And what do these server restarts actually do? Does it respawn all the lootstuffs on the map? When I browse through the servers I see some servers which say 'Playing' while others say 'Creating'. What exactly is the difference between these? And how long does it generally take for a server to be back up after the restart? Also, since I've had some trouble finding a proper server (the one I was on was perfect but I couldn't find it again :( ) maybe anyone would have some suggestions for the GMT+1 timezone? I'd very much like a server that's decently populated so that I at least feel like I have to be careful to not fall to strangers but which is at the same time very newbie-friendly (recruit-difficulty) because I have absolutely no clue about most things of the game and would like to explore without getting hunted by all military-equipped veterans. Thanks for your help and maybe until ingame.Cheers,Sliv Edited February 15, 2013 by Sliv
Steak and Potatoes 13480 Posted February 15, 2013 Make sure before you enter the server you arent jumping back and forth between public and private hive as you will lose the gear you earned on that private hive. If you remain on public hive for the duration your items will save to you no matter which public server you enter as long as you are not killed.
Sliv 1 Posted February 15, 2013 Ahem, what exactly is public and private hive? Is that like the difference between official and unofficial servers? Also, how do I tell the difference when I select a server?
Bansidhe 16 Posted February 15, 2013 All public servers are linked (hive) and so your character progress will transfer between servers. Private servers are not linked to the official public hives and so your character progress on a private server will not transfer across if you change servers.I use DayZ Commander as a tool to find servers. In the server list within DayZ Commander the private servers have a cloud icon with a x in it to show it is not linked. Any servers that do not have that symbol are public hive servers. As far as I understand things most players now play on private servers due to the influx of hackers into the game as they seem mostly prevalent on the public hives. Private servers still attract hackers but private server admin often have more tools to combat them. For example, if a hacker strikes a private server the admin can just "roll back" the server to a point before the attack happened and thus minimise the loss of gear etc. that players will suffer.
