Ghillies at distance

Recommended Posts

It's a well known problem proning people stick out like a sore thumb when far away as grass only renders at a set distance. What about making them partially transparent the further you are away. Short of overcoming the hurdle of being able to render grass everywhere it seems to me like it might be a decent halfway solution. You wouldn't have to go overboard with it, maybe 50% transparency at extreme distance but it's kind of annoying that you'd be as well happy dancing as proning in the undergrowth for all the cover it provides.

It seems like a good idea to me. Has mo dependency on the graphics and since the ground would be rendered green (usually) the transparent ghillie suit will help to disguise your profile from other characters. Thus there will be a point to wearing it again. You know, at long distances. Up close it's still amazing.

Pretty sure the Devs already plan on addressing this for SA not sure what their plans are for the mod, but as far as making them partialy transparent i think that might would work, but would probobly ad a significant load on the computer.

That would only work in a certain context.

There are many more potential backdrops than just grass and forest.

What about concrete? Or sand?

You'd have to make some distinction between what's going to provide camouflage and what won't. And staying hidden depends more on player's ability to spot you than the material you lie on. (not easily replicated by a computer, if at all)

Even if you are perfectly hidden, there should be a chance someone will pick out your silhouette. Transparency would be increasing your camouflage in a very artificial manner.

I have also thought about this before, and not only with ghillie suits, I once was in a situation when watching some guy in a town with buddies, it was very dark and raining, I was prone in the woods and he ended up seeing me. In a real situation they would have never been able to see me in those conditions.

Another solution that I'm not sure if it would be possible is that every time you zoom in, scope or use binos, the rendered grass should be focused on what you are looking at, not what is around you, that way when you have a scope on, you will render the grass on what your scope is looking at, not only will this make it more realistic and useful, but make the graphics of the game better automatically, because wherever you scope now its just plain.

It's not just about camoflage, the scale of visiblity between standing against concrete in a ghillie suit and standing in grass will remain exactly the same, it was more about reducing the artificial highlighting of a distinct character model at distance against a blurred background. In real life, it's massively harder to spot someone at the kind of ranges you easily do in game, adding a little transparency would mimic that real life effect at negligible cpu cost.

-- edit --

while i put ghillies in the title I'd add the effect to all characters at distance, naturally a ghillie would provide extra concealment in grass on top of this effect.

Oh. The impression I got from the OP was just ghillie/grass/transparency.

Talking in more general terms, I have less of an opinion.

If the standalone introduces a depth of field effect, it might help mitigate the player/surroundings contrast.

Most players i met use the suit in the wrong way because they lay down where they don't blend in with the environment ( wrong surface )...

The color of the suit should have an impact on where you can bee seen and where you can't. I had a funny encounter yesterday too bad i didn't record it. I was playing wasteland at dawn ( you could see clearly as it was already very bright ) and had a guy with OD pants, a flecktarn jacket and a black balaclava and was kneeling weapon down next to a wooden wall near a tiny shed when suddenly i heard footsteps coming from the house in front of me. I saw a player moving towards me at walking speed with his gun up so i though "oh oh i'm dead"...but he made a 90° turn to the right 5m away from me and went into a house... "phew". 1 min later he came out again turned left and again looked into my direction while trying to get back where he came from, this time i was aiming at him. He still didn't see me so i opened fire...so much for people and the need for camo, this also happened to me when wearing bright cloting a couple of times even in DayZ...
