City lights

Recommended Posts

I think that In big major city's like Cherno and electro should still have street lights on. I think that at least 1in 5 street lights should still have power ( or flickering) so that when a bandit looks over a city, and sees any sign of light that he dosnt sit down with his sniper and shoot some poor bambie looting the town. This would be a great help to fresh spawns on the coast. I know that they have a flashlight but sometimes that is just to obvious to see when he/she is sprinting around.

Actually, LED's are getting more common by the minute. These kind of lights need very little power and can stay on for ages before needing replacement. Chances are these would survive a long while into a Zombie Holocaust.

would be cool if you could take over a power station or something, and control the lights!

There is no electricity though, Rocket has been pretty clear on his reasoning behind that. Maybe we will see petrol generators or something in the future though

I did a massive amount of research into power generation during natural disasters. There is a great thread on straight dope about the subject, actually. http://www.straightd...ectricity-fails

It would appear, that under most circumstances unless authorities made a very concerted effort and had plenty of time to prepare, prior to abandoning a power station, that it would trip within hours (maximum days) of being unmanned.

The problem is the inter-connectivity of the power grid. Unless an area is deliberately disconnected to become an island in the power supply, even if you try and restart the power station it is going to trip. This issue was covered in Stephen King's "The Stand" quite well. Starting up a power station from having tripped is an extremely complex task, and very daunting, even for professionals.

It would take only a few problems in a country before, left unmanned, the power stations would turn themselves off and when one starts doing it, the cascading effect happens very fast. This has already been seen from recent disasters. Luckily, most natural disasters are reasonably localized so personnel are available and online to assist with prevent a serious power issue from becoming catastrophic across a nation.

Generation isn't the major key, it is the complexity of the system. Powering a few lamps is one thing, powering a town or a city is another.

Certainly, we do need some more work on lights to bring up the atmosphere, but I'm a total geek when it comes to the reality behind the situation. It is also terrifying to me, and important, to demonstrate to people just how fragile our system is when you take personnel out of a system. If the workers go home from the power-station, most will trip within hours.

Wouldn't solar panels in theory last for years and not need anything but the sun?

Petrol generators sound plausible though and wouldn't it be just frikking awesome to see Cherno or Electro lit up at night? even for the odd few hours!!

If solar panels or petrol/diesel generators are going to be of any use, the individual buildings/circuits you want to power would have to be disconnected from the grid. (easy enough)

I think if everyone can repair a helicopter main rotor assembly, getting the lights on shouldn't be totally impossible.

I've never worked with high voltage (>1000V AC) but it should be much the same as any other form of electrical engineering in principal.

If there's a source of fuel, the plant could be fired back up, but when it comes to running the place, it'll take a little bit of figuring out. And you'd probably need a small army.

Why not just add a nuclear powerstation in the game and have a valid reason for lighting? On atuo run. or player maintained?

I would love lighting in towns, would add some real scares with being blinded by light and having to give it time when running out again.

you would need a small army- AWESOME this is the sort of thing we need in this game

I'm from an island where most of the energy comes from petrol ,one of the highest electrecity cost in the world, because it's imported. No need to precise that if the ressources are cut, the lights are out.

As for solar panels, in theory it works, but beyond maintenance, auto sufficient buildings are not really encouraged to share their excess of energy stock through the grid(as in large scale), as it's not profitable for the people behind the actual systems. So only the few buildings which already have it could benefit of an eventual reprieve.
