Helicopter crashes and Parachute changes

Recommended Posts

We've all (well, most of us) had that moment when our chopper gets shot out of the sky and plummets straight into the ground blowing up and creating a huge fireball, or when we foolishly crash into a tree. I think this is a tad bit unrealistic. Choppers should be able to impact the ground or a tree without exploding and destroying everything nearby, though the crash would render the chopper useless and irreparable. Upon impact, players could start bleeding or break a bone. Rarely, they could die. Because of this ability to survive crashes, parachutes should be found as military loot, instead of being automatically equipped via exiting a chopper mid-flight. Thoughts?

I should be a bit more specific. Of course, if you direct the chopper vertically straight into the ground, the crash will more than likely kill you. If you were to steady it out more and crash horizontally, you should be able to leave the crash alive.

Eg.

How about a little notifier for whether or not your going to have a parashoot when you jump out?

actually surviving a helicopter crash is one of those things that doesnt happen a lot. If it were shot down or crashed into a tree most of the crew would most likely die. Given it shouldnt explode but in turms or realism living should be the rare occasion. Also parachuting out of the side of a helicopter is somthing people dont do for safety reasons. Helicopter crews dont fly with parachutes because in the event that helicopter does go down jumping out would likely put you into the rotar blades. in short, jumping out of a falling helicopter=dead parachute or not

...unless you're flying a little bird...then it WILL explode like that

Agreed. If you crash in a little bird, consider yourself royally screwed.

and say......your heli is falling at an angle and you jump at the opposite angle?...impossible to avoid rotors? or very easy

What sort of twat would be able to find & repair a Helicopter then crash directly to the ground / trees?

Let's disregard that for now.. Helicopters, especially the UH-1H, are extremely vulnerable. The UH-1H was created on a base-model of a 1952 model UH-1 Iroquois with added features, meaning it's still very weak. Let's say, for example, you're in a car is going roughly 160-250KM/h and you hit a tree; Would you expect anyone inside to survive, or the car to be fine considering? No. What's different with a Helicopter? They use the same materials, do they not? If anything, it's worse. You not only have sharpened pieces of steel reducing your body to pieces, but you also have the highly-explosive Fuel everywhere, resulting in a final eruption of flame & debris being scattered for miles. If you need an example of this, go look at the recent tragedy in-which a Helicopter collided with a Crane in London.

The above; Aha. As an estimate, I would say he was going roughly 40KM/h (..Due to the slow turn speed) and just meters above the ground.. Not to mention that's a very recent Gunship designed to take most calibre of round's without damage, whereas the DayZ Helicopter the UH-1H is a 1950's design made to only transport Troop's to the Military Outposts, occasionally to the front-line. Once more, If you need some-sort of mental image of what a Helicopter crash at speed is, look for the Helicopter that crashed into a Crane in London.

Deffinetly not "very easy" think about it, the wind would be pushing you into the heli so when you jump its going to be hard to clear the rotar blades due to the resistance. Plus for the pilots getting the door open would be near impossible. And no i doupt they could just climb in back. Helicopters are not very spacious.

Having recently been kamikaze'd in an Offroad by a Little Bird, whose pilot parachuted feet from the ground and then opened fire on landing, removal the gift parachute gets my vote.

The damage suffered on impact should be calculated proportional to speed, which goes for ground vehicles as well.

As for bailing out, the last real event I can recall was from a test programme in the 1990's. The crew of four escaped, including the pilot, though he was injured from jumping late to avoid houses. They took chutes specifically because of the high altitude tests they were conducting at 12,000 feet.

On the other hand, I saw another one spin into the ground in 2004 from a low hover after take-off. All the crew survived, with three walking wounded and two taken to hospital.

no parachutes would be better, its a bit annoying shooting down a chopper, while getting no bodies to loot after the crash.

and afterall, if a chopper even touches anything the whole frame is a wreckage, not possible to fly anymore, to be concrete.

without parachutes the crew would have to risk a crashland = challenge/risk => wrecked chopper (but survivors) OR total wrecked chopper (loot for others)

so, it would be nice to see some realistic crashing in DayZ, not like arma where there is a "repaired" , a "shot up" and a "burnt out" model.

maybe adding of an "wrecked" model would be nice ;)

It would be good if when someone shoots out the tail rotor it would cause the heli to spin out of control and if you were to eject you would have to risk beong hit by the heli.

Love it. Parachutes should be a one-use item, too.

maybe is ok for repack after but is like 20% chance is fail next times :D

parachutes... So what do you do of the spinning thing that is stuck on the roof of your helicopter?

You can already survive helicopter crashes if you know what you're doing in ArmA. Take the emergency landing training mission in the scenario menu.

You should be able to equip a parachute while in the heli from any seat, their should be a limited amount in each chopper.

Be a rareish spawn at hangers and ACT.

It shouldn't replace your backpack and you don't need the inventory option to access the parachutes in a heli.
