Is it worth it to start playing The Day Z mod when Day Z standalone is on the way?

This is a question people ask me all the time. And I'm not sure what to tell them.

The mod is awesome and free but is it worth buying ARMA 2 if the standalone version is on the way?

Will the skills you learn playing the mod crossover to the new game?

What do you all think?

I think it's for each individual to read up on all of the available information (there's lot's of it) and then make an informed choice as with any other purchase. There is no one-answer-fits-all response hence the MANY posts like this every week.
