no direct chat?

This is a pretty big problem in arma, I have it. There's no fix, other than re-installing your game as far as I know.

This is the best you can do. Just go to menu then audio options then adjust the VON to your liking (i go about 3/4 to the right)

I have that too. I assumed it was broken or I was doing something wrong. You can't speak in Direct and no one ever replies in writing when I type in it. Just use Side to write but only speak if you want to be screamed at and banned. Have fun!

What is the big deal about talking on side chat, why is it so taboo? Does it actually affect the game or are people just being sore for no reason.

Because it's f**cking annoying hearing people talk in side chat while you're trying to play. And when you're trying to listen for another player and all you can hear is people talking shit over the side chat, well it makes it kinda difficult.

Because everyone that's playing on the server can hear you. It's probably the most annoying thing you can do while playing.

Edited for spelling :)

HEAR, Fraggle, it's HEAR. :D

Also I just noticed that the DayZ forums are the only forums I've ever been on that don't have spastic emotes.

Ah ic so server broadcasted messages are to be in txt form to enhance realism of gameplay and for etiquette and proxy speak is for direct chat to simulate actually being able to hear them?

You can completely ignore the text. The sound of speech cannot be so easily ignored, unless you're married.

I'm not sure what you've done to test this, just make sure you're within range for direct chat. It's about 50m for direct text and 80m for direct speech. It seems to with the speech the further away they are from you, the quieter they are, as if in real life.

VOIP is not only an immersion breaker but just downright annoying, especially if you have to hear for stuff around or tactics with your allies. It's especially troublesome on the servers that don't have the name pop up for who's talking in side chat, so you can't just mute that one player. The only option is turn of VON entirely, which eliminates the option of using direct to talk to people.
