Mitritch 4 Posted June 18, 2012 Melee probably, but taking into account speed of zombie attack, it's gonna be last resort thing, I suppose.

ssg (DayZ) 8 Posted June 18, 2012 I don't think melee weapons are likely. To do such a huge change to ARMA engine would take tons of time. Doing it in such brief time would be nearly impossible. But if it is really done DayZ team really deserves applaud.I have no idea what else it could be. Mayby building something? Don't think so. I'm so excited to see what they have come up with. patluk@sasktel.net 1 Posted June 18, 2012 I don't think backpedalling while swinging the axe is going to fit the game. It will probably be middle mouse click on a zombie, go into longer animation of vicious axe swing to the head. Leaves you vulnerable, and you only really want to do it when you have that just one zombie who won't go away.
ssg (DayZ) 8 Posted June 18, 2012 Stealth killing zombies with hatchet would be great addition to game. Now killing silently is nearly impossible. Sure you can get crossbow easily but it's not very effective weapon with bolts being one time use only. Another silenced weapons are petty rare.Sneaking to town killing zombies silenty bashing their heads to mush while searching for precious beans. That would be experience! Coolcat (DayZ) 0 Posted June 18, 2012 Hmm what could it be used for without chopping wood, Well for one thing, it could be melee. Or it could be something like idk a useable item that you would need to perform another process.I really don't knowCoolCat
MissBehave 37 Posted June 18, 2012 With the entrenching tool and spools of wire, I am really hoping for being able to build some sort of shack or reinforced encampment. A hatchet for felling trees would be perfect; not really need to invoke a melee attack that could require a much longer development or drastic change to Arma.Perhaps even build a root cellar or some sort of cache to store weapons and food? If you are behind the zombie while it does it's attack on a player in front, you can still get hit if you are within range. Arma does not support true melee. drayson 158 Posted June 18, 2012 Anyone else notice if the xbow is one shot kill now? I've done some testing on chest shots and it seems to drop them but I haven't done that much testing. Also I would be all for a melee weapon and base building :P
redsnt 0 Posted June 18, 2012 Maybe the hatchet will have a middle scroll wheel option attack. Not so useful for zombies, but it could be pretty useful for taking down animals for cooking.
ZedsDeadBaby 2287 Posted June 18, 2012 Arma does not support true melee.Ranged weapon. Low damage. Silent. 2m effective range, 100% drop-off at 3m and beyond. Set number of uses or increasing chance to disappear (break) on use. Varying spread/cone depending on weapon type (like pellet vs. slug for shotguns). Voila. Melee done. This whole "ARMA doesn't support it" argument is confusing. We're not talking about implementing a grappling system or something. Melee will function exactly like every other weapon in the game.
armend94@live.co.uk 0 Posted June 18, 2012 Practically confirmed they will add melee with this tweet: Also, Rocket adds to it on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/v7yo0/sign_that_melee_is_coming_for_dayz/c524fnlLooks like we're getting melee combat in some form or another. Arma does not support true melee. It won't be on par with say god of war obviously but very possible. You shoot a gun, the muzzle flashes and people die say a 100 meters away. Change the animation to an axe swing and change the effective range to 2 meters. Boom melee weapon. Now I don't have the skills to do this, but when you break it down it doesn't sound impossible. livilaNic 13 Posted June 18, 2012 Great...I suppose he's going to nerf the Z's even more so than they are now? Being able to hide from them is VERY easily done. You can gather a whole city and evade most along the way to a hiding position. Once at said hiding position you can just sneak out the back door...As of right now getting anywhere near 2-3 (sometimes even one) Z you will be either knocked out or your legs will be broken. If the latter, I don't think you should be able to melee a Z to death from a prone position. I'll try it out, of course, but I'm not liking the thought of melee atm. Jamskis 0 Posted June 18, 2012 I'm not sure how well melee would translate with Arma II. It's not exactly the most "flexible" shooter game when it comes to fast reacting or reflexes. I think average cod / bf3 player already gets cholera from control schematics alone. But who knows, it might work out but we'll see. At least by Arma III. :)Stealth killing zombies with hatchet would be great addition to game. Now killing silently is nearly impossible. Sure you can get crossbow easily but it's not very effective weapon with bolts being one time use only.I think what we need is quiver of arrows that works same way as ammunition clips currently, as in one quiver could have 10 arrows or so ? Beans for thought. :)

With a quiver and fixed accuracy this thing would be amazing imo, make it happen at some point pls Rocket :p
gray1107 (DayZ) 0 Posted June 18, 2012 Of course it can be done, it's just whether it's worth prioritising at this point.
Landen 2 Posted June 18, 2012 its either a one hit scroll wheel attack, or its an equip-able item, like the binos and you click to swing it. either way, i hope its a one hit, as if you hack the z's head off or something. otherqwise it is a bit useless, one hit from a couple z's and you are in dire straits it will probably be an animation of a swing, similar to the zombies melee, hopefully it one hits zombies, but is somewhat slow(so people cant just stand in a doorway and constantly swing)the melee will require you to be stopped moving more than likely, the same way zombies stop before their attack animation.it seems as though the engine considers it the way you use your scroll wheel, imagine the zombies as characters, they run to you, stop, scroll wheel to attack, and the animation is played out and damage is dealt. Epsilon (DayZ) 10 Posted June 18, 2012 I REALLY hope its melee.. Anyone want to have some axe duels to the death!?Also you guys seem to forget that they just added new MOCAP animations so id assume it could easily be done with melee to have a proper animation/swing for the axe. On that note the only thing that would be difficult to code is attack range, attack speed ect to keep balanced aswell as how much damage the axe would do. BUT I think it could be done and would greatly increase the fun in the game as it would add more options and make it easier to kill that one fuckin zombie that is attacking you without the need to use a firearm. Also.. melee axe duels as I said really honestly do sound entertaining!
Villa Straylight 0 Posted June 18, 2012 My prediction: melee similar to the zombie attack, probably scroll wheel, no animations. As someone said and as was done with the zombie attacks, basically a scripted, short range AOE. Welcome, nonetheless. I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out! WeedFoXx 7 Posted June 18, 2012 I think mayby u can Destroy doors and later mayby u can Lock doors with an Plank or somithing....... im in inland so i cant test it with the doors ^^ melee wont work i think becouse zeds dont melee they make range atack but just 1-2 meters ..... like an pistol shot who stops automaticly thatswhy they can atack true walls i think but not sure ... ^^
