One simple question Helo vs Heli

Recommended Posts

Why are people saying Helo instead of Heli. Example; "Today I found an Helo Crash Site." Instead of; "Today I found an Heli Crash Site."

Hello there (or should that be Helo there?)

I edited your title for more clarity. We don't like 'em oblique. :)

The O is very close to the I on a keyboard ... maybe they missed the key or what creep says

I think almost all of the pilots I've flown with call them Helos, like AussieStig said.

On the other hand, the guy who sits in the left seat and yells at the moron who is about to walk into the tail rotor is a Heli-tech. Probably best not to think about it to much if you value your sanity.

Just don't call them Choppers.

Shacktac members refer to them as a helo in their videos so I just took it as an acceptable term.

The modern use of "helicopter" stems from the French "hélicoptère" which in turn stems from the Greek "Helico" and "Pteron".

In Greek:

Helico = Spiral

Pteron = Wing

"Helico" is the combining form of "Helix", which can mean many things but essentially means "Spiral" as in a "Spiral staircase" or the typical spiral shape of DNA.

Depending on how you want to abbreviate the word "Helico", you either get "HELIco" or "HELicO". Heli or Helo and both are equally correct abbreviations.

Though in Military and aviation use you tend to hear "Helo" used more frequently and "Heli" elsewhere, including "Chopper". (Especially in Australia)

Another term for Helicopter is "Whirlybird", most commonly used during the Vietnam war.

----

In short, both uses are equally acceptable and their use depends on where you learned it.
