DayzForumer 284 Posted February 2, 2013 Why are people saying Helo instead of Heli. Example; "Today I found an Helo Crash Site." Instead of; "Today I found an Heli Crash Site."

urspider2018@gmail.com 109 Posted February 3, 2013 Also, I found a thread in another forum about this exact same question, but on the flip side of the coin.http://www.pprune.org/rotorheads/407405-you-say-heli-i-say-helo-what-gives.html
aussiestig 681 Posted February 3, 2013 'Helo' is slang for helicopter in the military. It is pronounced 'he-low'.
Heiduk 265 Posted February 3, 2013 I think almost all of the pilots I've flown with call them Helos, like AussieStig said.On the other hand, the guy who sits in the left seat and yells at the moron who is about to walk into the tail rotor is a Heli-tech. Probably best not to think about it to much if you value your sanity.Just don't call them Choppers.
puppetworx 474 Posted February 3, 2013 Damn I've been calling them 'helichopters', am I not cool?

Josh225 129 Posted February 3, 2013 Shacktac members refer to them as a helo in their videos so I just took it as an acceptable term.
plrsniper 87 Posted February 3, 2013 The modern use of "helicopter" stems from the French "hélicoptère" which in turn stems from the Greek "Helico" and "Pteron".In Greek:Helico = SpiralPteron = Wing"Helico" is the combining form of "Helix", which can mean many things but essentially means "Spiral" as in a "Spiral staircase" or the typical spiral shape of DNA.Depending on how you want to abbreviate the word "Helico", you either get "HELIco" or "HELicO". Heli or Helo and both are equally correct abbreviations.Though in Military and aviation use you tend to hear "Helo" used more frequently and "Heli" elsewhere, including "Chopper". (Especially in Australia)Another term for Helicopter is "Whirlybird", most commonly used during the Vietnam war.----In short, both uses are equally acceptable and their use depends on where you learned it.
