Standalone launch servers

Recommended Posts

It's something that has been in the back of my head for some time.

Has Rocket specified any launch preparations? If we assume that when standalone comes out there will be a million people wanting to play on day/hour/minute one, will there be enough servers? If we have 200 people per server, even if we reduce the launch numbers to 500 000, it's going to be log-in mess as with most popular MMO launches... Will the hive (or the equivalent) be able to handle these numbers? Will there be just "official" servers, or will there some time for other server owners to get ready before the launch?

I am sure Rocket and BI have a plan for this, but I'd feel better with some confirmation.

Every server provider I have spoken to about having serves up from day one have given me the same response - BI havent released any details or made them privy to any server requirements yet. Also reading a few releases from the development team it seems there will only be a limited number of official servers available from launch.

Vilayer are the only company I found who stated their existing Day Z customers running the mod servers would be given the option to switch to Stand Alone from release though free of charge. That was when SA was on the horizon though (December 12) and there may well be a cost involved now.

Thinking about it logically I wouldnt image there wouldn't be too much difference between the Day Z server requirements and ARMA 3, or even ARMA 2 for that matter. Most companies just don't want to commit to anything before they get official word from the developers and I think it's a safe bet most providers who currently provide Day Z will be able to provide Day Z SA official/public hive servers, all be it in the restricted format of how Day Z public hive servers were.

Although I personally think having a limited amount of official servers may be fantastic for the game, it would be considered unsatisfactory for the general community now, many of whom play as parts of a group, clan or community who would want communal servers.

They have been approaching server providers to have servers ready for launch but last time it was asked they didn't have an estimate on how many servers that would be. I'm sure server providers will start selling standalone packages closer to release once they have the requirements and I know quite a few are going to allow existing customers to switch over.

Rocket also mentioned keys would likely be released in batches so that they could ensure there are enough servers online.

One can hope they have learned from the mod and the issues the hive faced when it exploded in popularity so have a better idea of what to expect and have planned for it but launches are rarely smooth when it comes to popular games so we will have to wait and see I guess.

all im bothered about is admins are locked for seing loot and other items i really hope this is not available in the standalone then im happy. as with many launches gunna probably be a bit of issues but thas normal with an big game.

server prices will probably be similar to what they are now with popular games.
