Why this game is headed in the wrong direction

I've played this game four hours today, and have never once laid my hands on a gun. I have a flashlight, a bandage, and some painkillers. They can see that I don't even have a gun, but people will still pump assault rifle rounds into me just to make sure I don't live. You know what the worst part about that is? I can't blame them, because they're making the right choice, and I would do the same in their position.

I'm not just talking about this patch. I'm talking about in general. Trying to encourage player cooperation is not the way to try and make this game better. The people who want to play the game as a CoD simulator with npcs will always play like that, and that's the majority of the player base. They don't care about surviving; they care about killing. There is nothing you will ever be able to do to change that.

I WANT to cooperate with people. The first person I ever ran into on a server three days ago was a friendly, and we played together for a couple hours. I've met one other friendly since then. Every other of the dozens of people I've met since have shot at me on sight.

Cooperating with others is stupid. If I walk up behind someone, I have three choices. Try to get away, shoot them in the back, or try to initiate contact. Assuming the first is not an option considering they will most likely see me in the hour it take to crawl away from them, there are realistically two things to do.

If I shoot the person, I get stuff. Happy me. I wouldn't even feel guilty. Why wouldn't I? Because I don't care about other people? No. It's because if I let him live, ask him if he's friendly, he'd probably kill me too. There's no reason to let him live. He doesn't have a gun and isn't a threat to me? Guess what, he's also no use to me like that. He'll just add to the chance of aggroing zombies and will still probably put a bullet in my brain the second he gets his hands on one.

Everything done to "encourage cooperation" only makes it harder for people who don't have shiny stuff to get shiny stuff. The people with shiny stuff can last for days and weeks, while the rest sometimes spawn on an island, or catch aggro without even taking a single step. The zombie buffs are actually a direct buff to people who have anything more than a flashlight, and the rest of use are left to die.

I'm going to try playing this game one more time tomorrow, with two friends. If by some chance we find a weapon, we'll be sure to gun down every stranger we see only for the fear that they would do the same to us. If that doesn't work out, I'm done with this game for good. I bought Arma 2 just for this mod, and now I'm really hoping that the rest of the game will be worth the thirty dollars without DayZ.

I agree with this, and its not like you would run out into an apocalypse with no weapon. I would not leave my house without some sort of weapon, blunt object or a knife. The knife would be better, as I would be able to slash wrists to cut tendons to disable them using their hands. You could also stab shoulders, jab eye sockets, and other range of tactics.

To have no weapon means griefers can just kill you with no risk of dying. I would at least like the chance to sneak up on them, knock them unconscious with a blunt object, or cut their throat.

I, and many other tried to argue that it would be a bad idea, because the truth it is a terrible idea.

Like you said it does not promote cooperation. What it does promote is making your friends buy the game. Yeah I just said it, since no one else will.

A bloodlust effect on zombies might work well. I don't know exactly how good it would work, but I think that sort of discouragement of pvp would work far better than the supposed encouragement of pve via nerfing everyone.

How about using your head and scouting before advancing? If you know players are somewhere and you are unarmed, stay out of sight. There are plenty of smaller towns to find a pistol or food. The cities are supposed to be dangerous and if you are unarmed going into one, prepare to die.

Rocket has said multiple times that he's just trying these things out. The mod is in ALPHA. If you're really that impatient, I actually highly encourage you to remove the DayZ mod from your computer. It shouldn't be anything that serious, really. Maybe a 24 hour timeout from that server, then 15-20 minutes timeout from the game in general? I think that'd be nice. Something to simulate death would hopefully keep the assholes at bay.

No game forced penalties are needed. What is need is available tools for people to enforce their own penalties on people.

Intel, Familiarity, notoriety. The ability to construct (and destroy) radio towers to broadcast said things to others which then allows them to I.D hostiles, friendlies and groups etc through colour coded and distance based text.

Long story short. Dayz needs Toolz. Not arbitrary penalties. That said I still like the heartbeat idea since we need a gut feeling mechanic.

I don't have an issue finding weapons, the New LoS patch allows me to sprint through towns without much care for zombies, find the nearest market, crouch down, quickly loot it up, go out the front or back doors to lose the zombies and then sprint north with my new equipment.

I have never had an issue with finding weapons.

Just reduce the amount of ammo available, people won't waste bullets on newbies if ammo is a rare commodity, they'll go after the kitted out dudes so that they can aquire more ammo .

What I'm criticizing is how you say you're going to be "done with this game for good" if it doesn't go well for you, and the reason I criticize that is because it doesn't sound like you understand the alpha, beta and full release process. This game will change and evolve over time, and I'm sick of people acting like it won't if it doesn't change this second.

Maybe you didn't really mean it when you said you'd leave "for good", but that's how you came off.

Its just from one extreme going into another extreme seems rocket like this and can say my mod is most harcore i dunno?

Why he makes it even insane harder is beyond me maybe he don't like many players?

Loot is even worse then before.

Now you don't have much chance survivng entering town or won't survive other trigger happy players your dead for sure.

When you want to make it harder at least keep spawn same and not make so more empty cans and bottles spawn plus give at least one makarov with one clip instead nothing.

Flashlight is stupid replacement.

Improvements are zombies when you enter buildings they losing sight on you or when you run you slowly losing also zombies thats good.

But rocket you slow down the game now alot more crouching that takes away the fun of the game.

Also less shooter many walk around with no gun in a game for FPS SHOOTING come on what where you thinking you want people to quit or what?

Give at least one sodacan, one beans can and one makarov with one clip, seems alot more logic then this empty bag crap:D

While I thank you for the idea of checking his forum page, what he's posted still doesn't quell my thoughts much. I still do not like the way the game is headed, and the only new thing I know is that he isn't listening to the community in this regard at all, and he's just going to do whatever he wants eventually. He has the right to do that, but that doesn't mean it's a good thing to do.

And when I said "done" I meant for this patch, at least. I'll try the next patch, and maybe the one after that, but know I won't keep blind faith forever either. If things keep going South, I'll quit for good, because right now, in four hours of playing 1.7.1, I have not found a single gun. Some of this surely has to do with my skill level, but that needs to be taken into account. If new players hate your game, your going to have a hard time keeping a community.

The biggest thing the devs need to keep in mind, is that this game REALLY sucks if you're not doing well. In Battlefield, I can go negative and still have fun. In Tribes, I can go negative and still have fun. In League of Legends, I can go negative and still have fun. In DayZ, if I get killed fifteen minutes after spawn, that is NEVER fun. With the way the system currently rewards players who are already ahead, this is a recipe for disaster, and I think this needs to be addressed in some way.

Well, if you don't like it, obviously there's nothing I can do to change that. However, I think it's worth mentioning that DayZ is supposed to be a simulator, more or less, and fun isn't guaranteed. This game doesn't seem to be "marketed" towards people who can't handle that.

I understand your frustration with how it's going, but keep an eye on it. It might turn into something pretty awesome.

The saying "shooting fish in a barrel" could be applied to pre-1.7.1, with survivors with Makarovs on the coast. Now the saying should be "shooting pigs in a bucket" since we have no way of defending ourselves. The mod is going downhill, Rocket needs to add back the Makarov with 2 or 3 clips. I've decided not to play again until they fix this. I might be a whiny carebear, but most people who defend it just don't want to admit that their hastily posted comments were wrong.

Edit: While Rocket is "trying things out", I'm still spawning in the middle of nowhere with all my items wiped. Yeah, it might be in alpha, but this is a mod, not a game. He should be fixing bugs before adding shitloads of content.

The bandit skin was actually quiete a good idea, gameplay with it was a bit better. Killing is more easy than to take the risk for communication with other players. As a bandit it is just to easy if you are killing on sight, except someone use the exploit and server hops like described in another thread....both things should be adjusted for a better gameplay.
