Filmic Lighting - Server List And Discussion (Your Input Is Valuable)

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow survivors and bandits!

Dwarden has been having a few of us server owners try out some slightly different visuals through the filmic lightning mode instead of reinhard. I figured it was proper time to start a thread about it and I'd like to see some feedback on it. Curious to see what people prefer.

Note: This only affects certain visuals. It does not alter anything DayZ related.

Requirements:

DayZ 1.7.1.1

Arma 2 OA Beta 93825

Example video

- First night / dusk test

- Night test 1st and 3rd person - Flashlight and Muzzle Flashes

- Day time test around 4pm server time

>> Youtube encoding will make these videos darker than they appear in game <<

More videos will be added from user posts here and what I can record later today. Bonus points if we get some good sunrise/sunset video.

Screenshots

Sunset: http://ragecagegaming.com/images/dayz/ARMA2.Filmic.Tone.Mapping.-.Sunrise.in.view.png

This is best witnessed in person for the full effect. :)

You can also find filmic servers by filtering for the word filmic in your server browser.

Your Mission (If you choose to accept it)

I encourage you all to give a filmic server a try with a "normal" gamma and brightness settings during the day and during the night. Compare it to a server with the non-filmic visuals and report back here. Tell the community what you like more and why. Don't be afraid to post screenshots and comparison videos!

Final Words

I'll continue to update the server list as more servers become available. Keep in mind this is just an experiment and does not have any affect on the mod itself. It's just visual changes.

This thread is in no way endorsed or affiliated with the dev team. I'm just a server owner trying to help tabulate what people prefer. Your input will be helpful for this test.

I'm on the same plane as you salty, and I think you'll get used to the night. I like how the light looks a bit more soft and "dirty." It feels a bit more realistic and isn't as harsh brightness wise. Yet the overall nighttime brightness seems to be a tad bit more, so objects aren't complete black like Reinhard's dynamic range.

Lightning at night is something you should see too if you manage to catch a storm around that time.

Nice to see we've moved from "too dark to see" onward to "too dark to do anything useful."

That flashlight looked useless.

Keep in mind:

  • I'm viewing its usage from afar
  • The youtube encoding does effect dark colors a bit
  • I'm running lower gamma settings then I "should have been"

I have an e-IPS panel so my color representation is a bit better than a TN. I watched this video later on an iPad and I realized how dark it looked outside my computer monitor. I'm going to go back and re-record with slightly higher gamma tonight if possible.

I highly recommend giving it a shot for yourself. The flashlight shouldn't be useless at all. I've been using my just fine.

The flashlight was not from your perspective, so that's just the cast decal from another user? It wasn't that I thought the color was off, but that the flashlight looked functionally useless. It was too dark to make out anything.

I'd like to see it from the equipped users perspective.

My Monitor is Color corrected, as I'm a GA.

at default gamma and brightness, I found dawn on UK 7 strained my eyes - it felt like the contrast was wayy too low

I inched up gamma and brightness to find a clear image, but things got a touch washed out

I didn't think anything off it until I saw this thread, now I'm wondering if that's the effects of filmic on a TN

better start saving for that HZ30Wie

I was on EU 39 earlier. (dieing of thirst, but that's another story)

I don't know if it affects the foliage but I was in a meadow and the colours were vibrant but in a pastel kinda way. If you know what I mean. Looked like a watercolour painting. This was early morning game time, just after dawn.

I would have stuck around but decided to switch servers after dieing rather than respawn because after hours of nice play and chat 3 people started talking about "killing niggers".

Keyboard warriors is one thing but it got a bit much.

Note: That's no reflection on the server btw. They may not have had any admins on at the time. It's the first time I had been on that server so I will return as up to that point, even though I died, I really enjoyed my time on that server.

Playing on a FILMIC server right now, it's quite bright but at least the night is playable.

However, I dont know what time it is - server says GMT+1, which is 22:00, but it feels like a rainy afternoon.

EDIT: That server was borked, playing an UTC+2 one now and it's pitch black. Completely unplayable without a light source. (not unrealistic, but still sucky). Gamma 1 brightness 0.9

Oh ok my bad... I had no idea this was a community that was like that.

I'm not really political but I hadn't realised what I had gotten into when I signed up on these forums. I will leave you to it as I want no part in any of it.

Gotcha. Yeah I'll try to get some flashlight footage tonight ;)

What was your HDR set at and what post-processing quality? I don't think it has anything to do with a TN, could just be a matter of finding the right balance. Maybe even a setting with the monitor itself or color correction on the video drivers.

Interesting. How was the dynamic range when you looked around? Like at the sun and away from the sun? HDR and post processing settings?

Well to be perfectly fair, there is no true default. As everybody's monitors and setups are different, you may have to adjust it to a setting that works for you. :) - Just as long as you aren't ramping it up so far the colors wash out.

@HowIChrge

I have postprocessing 'off' because I find it caps my fps at a juddery 30 on two 6950s (all else maxxed @1080p)

HDR is on Very High

colours were calibrated a month or so ago, and I haven't knowingly changed anything since then

I saw Molten's comment and thought of that kid with his toy gun trying to be all gansta

I loled at that image of Molten's antagonists

Is this the sort of effect you're seeing?

http://www.nomandown.com/arma2/tm_comparison/index.html

I believe this is the new Reinhard, but the changes to dynamic range may also be similar in Filmic (Doubtful though, I'd have to ask Dwarden about the numbers). Definitely a difference from before and I can understand why you think the contrast is a bit off.

It's a change that's for sure (not as much range with darker areas). If you notice some of the light casting from the sun on the trees, it pops more in the newer version. But just to mention again, this is with the changes in Reinhard not Filmic.

I've also added a new night time video to the OP and will add a day time one as well.

EDIT: My video looks nothing like that screenshot comparison, so I'm thinking filmic doesn't share those qualities. Then again the sun is out, so we'll see once it gets to dusk.

Wow, that looks perfect imo. If that is becomes the way night looks soon, I will be extremely happy.

I like it, it's just visible enough to see, but dark enough to be gritty and scary. Even with the flashlight.

Uploaded a daytime HDR vision adapting test in the forest to the OP. Server time was around 4pm.

I had this filmic lighting bug with an earlier version of the beta already. I was told in the forums to switch back to an older version which kinda fixed it.

Today I play again to find this bug reimplemented even with the new patch. I join a server and the screen is pitch black with a little trace of gray in the sky. Unable to identiy trees, fences, houses, anything. Unable to even move properly as you can run against a fence for some hours without noticing.

I am a great fan of this mod and it is amazing work you guys did. Still this night-thing was a really bad move(bug?). I don't even see how people find anything good about it but I am almost certain those that are screaming "this is so cool" have either some sort of weird aimbot-auto-target-low-graphics-model-hack or some weird pro graphic designer screen that just lets them adjust the game so they might be able to see at least something at all.

As we all know chemlights, flares and flashlights are not really a valid option. They might be handy at rare times but using them constantly - you can aswell just kill yourself - and I am not even talking about zombies.

Apropos... I tried moving around a bit in this dark soup of nothingness and noticed that while I was unable to see even one meter in front of me, I had one point at the "visibility-eye". Means even though I was unable to see anything zombies could see me quite good. Means towns are not a valid option to go to.

So no towns at night, still a black forest where you run against every tree does not sound so much fun to me either...

So to keep it constructive:

Eyes get used to light after a while - implement THAT first. Then you can mess up the lightning like this patch did. This is not only far more realistic but also gives you some more options like, throwing a flare at someone to blind him and "steal his darkness-adaption". Maybe implement flashbangs and stuff... as right now I am running around like I was just blinded by some enormous lightsource and this is far from realistic.

Just to clarify something before I continue on. I have no relation to the dev team, and these fixes are experimental just for a handful of these servers as of this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own. :)

That being said. The lighting tweaks to filmic for these servers are in the mission file itself. So the best bet would be to jump on an actual filmic listed server making sure you have the latest beta and latest version of DayZ. See if you still have that pitch black bug (which I've witnessed before, but only because I had some issues with updates server side).

In theory, you shouldn't have that problem in these servers and should be able to identify your location.

My biggest gripe isnt night, but the way that object shine (cans) and trees/leaves seem to pulse brighter and darker during the day.

Very unrealistic.

Will hop on and see if this helps the issue

EDIT:

OK I went on a few of the servers. Daytime looks altogether much more realistic. Night time is still very bark, but if you tweak your gamma you can tell where you are going by the light against the trees. It was an overcast night so is probably an example of night at its darkest as well.

I remember the night how it used to be, total darkness. Things are much better than they used to be.

Roll it out, I think it is good.
