Isn't DayZ mostly about realism?

Recommended Posts

I think we've gone past realism in some areas with 1.7.1. I started playing in 1.7.0 and I LOVE the brutality. It's a great mod. But it seems like we're creeping into being difficult just for the sake of being difficult. Here's what I'm thinking:

Realistic:

1) As much as I hate to admit it, starting without a gun is more realistic. I live in Idaho and I have guns, but most people don't. I agree with this one, but it requires some additional mechanics, like melee (see below)

2) Zombie aggro range. It's higher than it was and it seems more realistic (But I should point out that it doesn't improve my experience - especially since I'm not allowed to defend myself when I spawn)

Unrealistic:

1) No melee. There is no way to quietly dispatch a single zombie except with a crossbow. Realism would require that I could bash some heads in. Not everyone has a gun, but would you leave your house without a golf club, bat, kitchen knife, axe, fire poker, meat tenderizer, paper weight, etc?

2) Starting with no weapons. We would realistically have SOMETHING. And if we're not allowed to melee then I think it's unfair to take our starter gun. It's unrealistic to be completely defenseless.

3) Starting with no food/water. That's the second thing I'd grab if I'm forced to flee my house, right after a weapon.

4) Pitch black nights. Even starlight should give some light. We shouldn't be forced to use a flashlight when it's not necessary. Would you want to use a flashlight while creeping through town in the middle of a z-apocalypse?

5) Needing food and water so often. We're already doing night and day in real-time. This means we would need food and water at real-time intervals as well.

6) Too many guns (again... melee would be our primary defense). Guns should be a novelty and very rare. But this might change the dynamic more than you intend.

6) Too much PvP. This playstyle is fun for some people and that's cool. But really, people would be forced to co-operate more often than shooting at each other. It is totally unrealistic behavior when 75% of the people I run into try to kill me. I don't know how you would balance this. It seems like the high abundance of guns might be contributing to it.

Keep up the good work. But I should point out that if it keeps getting more unrealistically brutal, then I, with scores of others, will definitely be leaving this mod behind...

EDIT - just changed the title

Interesting points.

Knives would be great. Actually, even the ability to punch and kick would be great.

2) Starting with no weapons. We would realistically have SOMETHING. And if we're not allowed to melee then I think it's unfair to take our starter gun. It's unrealistic to be completely defenseless.

Read number 1

3) Starting with no food/water. That's the second thing I'd grab if I'm forced to flee my house, right after a weapon.

I would not. There are grocery stores In every town and city.

4) Pitch black nights. Even starlight should give some light. We shouldn't be forced to use a flashlight when it's not necessary. *Would you want to use a flashlight while creeping through town in the middle of a z-apocalypse?*

I would go somewhere safe, sleep and try again in the morning.

Yeah, hand to hand would be cool. We probably couldn't do much damage since most of us can't bash skulls in with our fist... but it would buy us some time if we could knock em over.

I would not. There are grocery stores In every town and city.

Good point. But where is this abundance of grocery stores in the mod? It would be nice if we could stumble upon a partially stocked supermarket every once in a while.

I would go somewhere safe, sleep and try again in the morning.

So would I but that mechanic does not exist. And we're allowed to play at night, which is cool. I just wish it was a more true-to-life experience.

Some good points here. however people bring this in to it. in real life there are no bandit skins for 1 type of person or 1 skin for survivor. then they say in a real life apocolyps you dont get a weapon when you start off or you need food or water to survive. so they allow for 1 thing but not allow for another thing just to suit the way that person plays (bandit clearly who doesn;t want to be known as a bandit to kill friendly people) and not what is real. They also bring in the fact that Arma is a so called simulator. then people say no its not simulators are not fun people dont play them. this is true. and if it was a simulator these guys have the slowest weapon reloads in the world i mean they cant even shoot and walk at the same time. or change weapons while moving. in real life this is very possible. in real life you carry up to 7 magazines full frontline ammo with a pistol, torch, weapon and so many other things which this game character can not carry. i mean a torch takes up 4 slots in here I think.

so I dont think people can use sits a simulation so they cant change the mod to make it unsimulated. its already unsimulated

2) As for weapons I think at least a crossbow. I am in Australia and you can own weapons but wiuth a licence. then they are kept at the club or in your safe if its to a high standard. The weapons we are allowed to have are bows and in my state we can have a crossbow without a licence. so maybe everyone could get a crossbow. we all know how much we hate the thing

5) as for food and water. if In real life we needed to drink 1L of water every half hour or 1 can of soft drink every half hour we would drown. 48L will drown you in 1 day. 50kg of food will kill you.

6) too many weapons yes indeed. how many houses where you life do you think has a winchester and a pistol layig on the floor.

7) too much PVP yes. if it was real life the human race would be wiped out in 33 minutes. look at the average life span of a player. also in real life you need to be watched and protected while you sleep so killing people would make you a solo player and you would die. you need people to survive.
