I have two copies.. but am locked to one character?

Recommended Posts

So I purchased two copies of the game, one on steam and one retail. Both are legit Arma2 + OA expansion. I did this so I can play my own character and my GF can play another.. (not at the same time).

However, this does NOT work.. From what I can tell, this is due to IP/MAC address restrictions? I have paid for two completely individual copies and should be able to experience all aspects of the game on each copy, including the persistent character per CD-KEY.

I would love to see an official developer response on this issue, although I am not so sure that will happen.

I'm not going to throw a tantrum and "quit the game", but I think this is a very poor decision on the part of BI and had I know I would have not purchased an additional copy.

Flame away =)

I thought each copy used its own GUID based on the CD-KEY? Or maybe that is just battle-eye locking to the MAC address.. If so that's a very poor implementation (just my opinion as a game developer).

How have you set up the two different copies,. do you change game key in steam before starting to switch? or do you have 2 different installs?

due arma2 devs stupidity, CDKEY stored inside windows registry as global non user specified key, so, only way to play multiple copies on same machine at same time is virtualization and on same machine not same time - changing registry every time.

you must find your CDKEY inside registry and write simple load script that will change key for you.

Yeah I installed them both separately and with different CD-Keys.. Seriously a very poor implementation they should have done proper user-based registry entries.

Make a new Steam account, add the retail version to that one with the correct launch options as a new game(no purchase required), and switch between Steam accounts to play.

cant you start windows with a new user and install their?

Yes this should work. As long as you are not installing to all users when you install the game.

Moved to troubleshooting.

I answered a thread I had on this earlier that might be of interest:

http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=12236&pid=129841#pid129841

Also' date=' I've heard that when you log into another steam account, steam will change the registry entry for that account, but a non-steam version will not.

I looked at what you said, found the key part. The problem IM having is I think my friend has my steam ARMA cd key in her registry and so when she loads up her own ARMA into DayZ she logs into DayZ as ME. So what I'm trying to do is be able to change the cd key on her computer to the cd key steam says is hers for ARMA:OA... but, when I pull up regedit and all that mess my product code for OA in steam is no where near the same as my KEY numbers in regedit...

Suggestions?
