What Recording Software should I use?

Thinking of starting a DayZ series.

I have been watching Sacriel's videos and am impressed by the quality of his videos. How can I get that sort of image quality. Does anyone know what recording software he uses?

I assume he also uses Adobe After Effects, Photoshop and Sony Vegas for editing and rendering.

I want the best quality possible. I am running a quad core and will allocate the recording software its own core whilst the others can handle DayZ. I also have an SSD which I will be reinstalling the game on so my 1TB HDD will not be reading&writing.

My experience with fraps is that it is average quality. Would be looking for something better.

I will be using all 3 of the above (photoshop, vegas and after effects). I have experience with all.

The reason I am unsure about what recording software will get me the best quality is because I have only ever recorded for one game which had its own ingame .dem system, CounterStrike. So I have never actually needed recoding software before.

Trust me, i have tried many screen recorders in my time and fraps is always what i fall back on. I edit the vids with vegas and compression is reasonable :)

i use msi afterburner to record gameplay vids.. i find less lag with afterburner then you do fraps and the quality is great

Bandicam is handy. It auto converts your videos for you so that it doesn't eat up your HDD space like fraps does. The free version of bandicam allows you to record 10 min. which I feel is more then enough for a video.

DXTory for the win!

Best recording software. Well worth the money for it.

Record on multiple drives, separate audio streams. The only thing is raw uncompressed files are massive. Larger than fraps. But video recording does not interrupt you FPS as it does with fraps which is a huge bonus. I will never use Fraps again unless they make it like DXTory

I have gone for DXTory, but I am having an issue with write speed. Only getting like 15mb/s to my HDD for some reason? Any ideas? If I do it to my SSD I get 300 but I need that for windows, its not for storage.

FPS isnt an issue. It just seems the write speed cripples the video and it also cripples me ingame.

Thats weird with only 15mb write speed. With my hd i get about 90-100. With my SSD which is strictly for recording. I get 240. I recommend getting a 240 GB SSD for recording, do not record on your C drive where Arma is located. When i get home i will check my settings on DXTory and get back to you.

Mine is 7200RPM I believe. I have run the benchmark multiple times and it varies between 10 and 30. Never managed to get 30 whilst actually recording though.

Okay thanks. A SSD that big will probably be out of my budget and I would need more space than that anyway. I think I will reinstall Arma2 on the SSD and then see if there is any improvement on the write speed. However, that wouldnt explain the benchmark.

Just tried a benchmark with HDTune. Wouldnt even let me. Left is write, Right is read.

Edit: Nevermind, apparently this benchmark does that on purpose to stop you destroying all your data..

Matt is the hard drive you record on a partition? Or do you have other files on that drive? Recording should only be done with its own non-partitioned drive for best results.

If 240 GB is too big, then use a 120 GB one, they go for around 100 bucks. Save $25 a week and by the end of the month you can get one. All you are doing with an SSD is specifically for recording. Once you are done recording move the recorded files to another drive for editing.

Is your Arma not on your C: SSD? If not, get it in there, Arma not only relies on CPU & GPU speed hard drive speed is also a factor.

The Hard Drive has other files on there. It is the main one for my PC. I have just argued that even though there is other stuff on there, it is not in use when I am running the benchmark, but now you have said the same as the other guy, so I guess I must be missing the point!

Thing is, that space will run out really quick whilst recording. I did a couple of tests earlier and a minute is roughly 2.5gb, I could be recording for a long time.

I just put in an old HardDisk (only 500gb) and that is giving me around 80mb/s. I am going to see what results I get with that in a second.

I will put Arma on the SSD along with the operating system whilst I am asleep. Il post an update asap!

Okay, so I just recorded to the 500gb drive on its own. My game was stable and so was the video. I recorded at 29.97 and am going to run another test at 24 as well.

Its looking good at the moment! Maybe no need to shell out for a SSD!
