Can't place tent, doing something wrong?

After reading the changelog for 1.7.1 where it was written that you now can place tents anywhere except in buildings i tried putting up my first tent ever. However, I cant seem to place it anywhere even if i go by the old rules of finding a flat surface with no trees around.

I right click the tent in my gear and select pitch tent but get the message saying i need to place my tent on a flat surface with nothing around it.

Am i doing something wrong?

There's already threads about this, it doesn't appear to be working where you can place it anywhere.

No it's simply not working. tried it in an empty flat field with no objects within 50 meters and still it wont place. very annoying.

kinda annoying bug... I've had 7 tents, and I finally decided to put it down this time before I die and can't. :(

It works like that:

- Open gear.

- Right click and click pinch tent while slowly moving forward.

- Try again and again.

You can move while your gear's open.
