Bought my Arma 2 copy about 5 days ago just only for a DayZ mod, due my friend been playing DayZ from a summer and all the time was trying to lure me into playing this game.

Untill I cracked and picked it up at Steam X-mas sale.

Why delay? Well I kinda did not like idea about zombie apocalypse and I am not huge fan of FPS games either.

As I tough they all are same from L4D till I even don't know till what, maybe Dead Space.

Trying to create horror action but all what they offer is plain bashing zombie/monster heads and emptying whole mag on whatever is moving in a darkness till it falls down dead (well it probably was dead already but making it even more colder?), however when I put my hands on keyboard to launch for very first time DayZ it changed everything within first 4 hours of gameplay.

Survival idea blow me away, its not like I did not know that I have to raid places/towns to get weapon etc etc, but that I actually need food and water/sugar to survive!

Its not like DayZ game/mod (call how you wan't it) came up with idea about surviving within a game nor I have not been playing survival games in the past, but in DayZ it fells just right, I would say natural!

Almost for a week I am very addicted to a DayZ, and I fell sorry only for that I did not buy ArmA to play DyZ many months ago.

I know that this mod is in a Alpha status and DayZ stand alone is coming out some day in future, I would like to point out some things which I found little bit wierd and some things which made me yell in middle of night.

*So you spawn (I assume) in a random place without any knowledge who you are and where you are and why you are, that's all cool and sets up atmosphere of game, but in some stage of game you are willing to gain some explanation, atleast some backstory of infection or why you are here.

Here is one example which came up in my head meanwhile I was writing this thread so far:

You are <put here any country> marine( or an spec op/ SAS w/e)/ maybe a part of team which been sent to investigate wierd reports of Chernarus but something or someone was attacking you/ your team on your way near Chernarus and you been cast away into your destination point (without knowing that its your destination) and you have lost all of your memories when whatever happened, but you struck to survive (as every single alive creature) and slowly you are putting puzzle together of mystery what's going on around you and WHY it is happening.

Maybe it was russians fail attempt to create new biological weapon? Maybe it was success of experiment not a fail? Who really stands behind it?

There isn't reason without a cause!

Could it be a close Russian government secret nowadays of 70s meanwhile Chernarus was part of USSR? Experiment still could be active and russians still researching it, story could take a great spin in present day.

I am just pointing out here that DayZ can have very, very strong story line, cause there are so many great possibilities!

**I'll update this thread later on*

You're smokin' a bunch of crack looking for hope, salvation, or meaning in the mod.

There's no story, no point, and you're going to die a pointless death. If you're lucky, someone will have killed you for the gear you carry.

Welcome to the bleak wasteland that is dayz.

The best game I've played in 30 years.

Maybe you are right AIRCAV, but keep in mind that great story makes a great legend!

Hope? No, I am not searching for hope nor salvation, but a reason!

You are wrong about not having a point, even now there is a point, point to survive as long as you can, but why?

Is it a human nature? Could be, but why you are not giving up and pulling a trigger in some barn and blow your head off? Cause you think there is a salvation or a reason to stay alive.

See how it twists around,

Story don't need to be within a game, but about game cause it can break everything what we love about DayZ right now.

Maybe possibility to create our own story within our profiles?

Or a player dairy which you can loot of your freshly killed "enemy" for whatever reason it was and read it by your camp fire at night?

My thread isn't even near to be done, its time to take a nap anyway, late morning already.

I don't really like the suggestion. My reasoning? Well, DayZ is, essentially, your story. You are the character. You, and your career, your family, your ambitions, and everything about you fill in the story.

Also, there is going to be a storyline in the sense that the game will tell you how the infection spreads, what it does, etc. In fact, the creator of the game had his brother, a virologist, help him create the games disease.

I think the initial premise of the game story so far is plenty enough to go on, it's genius in fact, the very reason you yourself are having these story ideas is proof of that, and that you take the time to share it with everyone is great. Like it says on the front page "This is your story" and if there's a story that you like that you associate the game with, then that's fine, everyone will have a different version. The story from my perspective is told through how the infection will eventually evolve in different ways, how it will affect my game and other peoples game play and judging by how Rocket wants to greatly expand on the medical system side of things and make it more complex opens more doors for interpretation on how things will eventuate.

I recall in the very early days of DayZ reading something about the storyline and it revolved around some dumb shit like SAS coming to save Russia and failing to save them or something. I do not think thats how it is now and was just a placeholder.

DayZ does have a story but you have to make it yourself! You are the story in the game and thats what makes it interesting! In my opinion I like to think that Chernarus was in a civil war and some terrorist/government person released a top secret virus that turned most people into zombies!

All the best zombie films don't even try and explain whats happening, and leave it up to the imagination. You're guy washes up on the beach and knows nothing about the situation he's arrived at, you can discover some interesting pieces of a puzzle (ie Green Mountain) but you can't solve it.

DayZ is just a backdrop to the story you create as a survivor.
