The 1.6 is referring to the version of ArmA II that you have, not DayZ. DayZ patch 1.7.1 requires the latest ArmA II beta version, which is the version number you see when browsing the server listings.

IT should install as usual, just download it from here.

Beta patch is backwards compatible, so you can still play on non-beta servers. If you have previous beta patches it's suggested to unistall them before installing a newer version. You can also try deleting beta subdirectory inside ARMA 2 folder manually.

1) Download and install beta patch from http://www.arma2.com/beta-patch.php

2) Go to the Arma2:OA main directory and right-click on shortcut "Launch Arma2 OA Beta Patch". Add "-mod=@dayz" without quotes to the target line.

3) Run "Launch Arma2 OA Beta Patch" and enjoy playing on beta servers!

The ArmA2:OA directory should be in your steam games folder on your computer. Note that while installing the Beta patch is relatively simple (just download and double click the file that downloaded.) Actually running it takes a little bit more work if your working with steam. Personally, I use the ArmA II Launcher can be downloaded here, point it to my ArmA II exe, my ArmaIIOA exe, and the beta exe. It may help you to watch some of the videos on this thread here as well. I'm getting this as well, same place I've always downloaded from. It's asking for a username and pass. WTF.

Strange, it lets me through no problem... My only thought is to try making an account on ArmA II.com? Really the only thing I can think of.

No - I've never made an account anywhere and I can access the beta patch page just fine. Always has been.
