Zombies & You: The Suggestions

  1. 1. Which types of Zombies would you prefer/desire?

    • The Infected ( Current DayZ Zombies, AKA 28 Days Later Zombies)
    • Walkers ( The undead of The Walking Dead, for a more ARMA look at these zombies check out the following mod video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=zuvttFLgIB8)
    • Combination of Both ( The Infected rise again and become Walkers if not killed by headshot)

DayZ: the epitome of zombie games to date, however, it lacks one key feature: an actual zombie threat!

Now, to begin I'll start with posting a poll for those that do not wish to read the oncoming wall of text and want just a summary of my full idea. For the rest of you all, I'll give a more detailed explanation below.

Let's put ourselves in the shoes of humanity during the impending zombie apocalypse. If The Infected were our zombie of choice, it's ability to turn your everyday samaritan into a raging, flesh-hungry psycho path in seconds, not to mention the fact that they run like an Olympic runner, would surely kill the majority of human kind in but a few months at most. The thing with The Infected however is that they are, technically, still human and "alive." They can be killed by many things besides a head shot, and because they are still technically "alive," will eventually die once their food supply runs dry; henceforth ending the zombie apocalypse as we know it within a year, allowing the survivors to rebuild in a world without raging zombies. We do not want that, we want a continuing zombie apocalypse to fuel our fun!

This time, let's put ourselves in the shoes of humanity during another zombie apocalypse in a parallel universe. The Zombies of this universe, however, are not The Infected but they are the slow-changing, slow-moving Walkers that we all know and love from our beloved The Walking Dead & Night of the Living Dead directed by Romero. Depending on which lore you may take it from, things would go differently (for instance, in TWD,no matter how you die (except headshot) you become a Zombie) but we'll say that you only become infected if bitten/scratched/spit on/etc.... If this were the case, the "Walker" apocalypse would surely not even happen. They are just too damn slow. I, along with others I am sure, have enough faith in humanity that we would be able to put hold the impending apocalypse if it were the case of the Walker Zombie -- in the scenario I am discussing at least -- and continue on with our lives after the initial panic. This obviously would not make for too much fun.

Being that this is a video game and all, I realize that a "real world" scenario is not all that important. But also, being that this is a video game and all, I think the current Zombies won't necessarily appeal to not only all Zombie fans, such as myself, but to all gamer types. There is no variety, and at least now, no "real" threat from the Zombies. Not only will my following idea give a variety in the upcoming standalone version of the game, but it will also allow, for what I think at least, a more interesting game play experience with a twist that is not only fun, but makes sense!

Now for the actual idea: in the next sentence. Let's assume that DayZ actually has a story and when the apocalypse "begins" I.E., the servers boot up for the first time, Patient Zero has already been infected and has begun his rampage of infected the population of the world. You spawn in, and because it's a zombie game, it may start on Day 1, or maybe it'll be a week after the initial infection, whatever it is doesn't matter. You spawn in with your newly created character to a world that is in rampage, or ,more likely, to a world that is already infected. There are a TON of Infected in every city and every town, and you begin your Zompocalypse fun. You kill these guys just as easily as you could kill your neighbor, a shot to the chest, bleeding out, etc... Now, after a while, their numbers are thinning and The Infected aren't really a threat anymore because their numbers have dwindled and they're easy to kill. But here's the catch: they start rising from the dead, immune to all damage but head shots. Sure, they are really slow, but man do they have numbers, and even worse, man they are FREAKING HARD TO KILL! So now does DayZ not only have the (obvious) other living human threat but an actual VARIED zombie threat without throwing in mutant special zombie CRAP like L4D.

Well that's the gist of my idea for now, let me know what you all think! And, if you like it, make it popular!

Lemme see if I get this straight (I probably won't): You want DayZ to have a story that includes a minimal zombie threat in the beginning of the game, then as you progress through the days, the zombie threat will be come increasingly dangerous?

Kind of, but not really. More or less it starts in a world FULL of The Infected, and every time you kill an Infected (except head shot) they become a Walker after a certain amount of time. So technically I guess you are right, but wrong at the same time. The beginning is full of Infected, later being more full of Walkers, yet still always having at least some what of an Infected threat because, which I'll edit later into the post because I forgot, there are always people getting infected (survivors you didn't know about, in this case, NPC's, or players if Rocket takes it that way.) Mind you this transition of more prominent Infected filled world to more Walker filled world would take a considerable amount of game time. So there would, technically, be servers all at different times of the infection for those wishing to play whatever type of Zompocalypse they desire.

DayZ is adding a zombie lifecycle. Not a lot of details have been released, but it's commonly thought that it will makenew zombies are fast and weak and old zombies slow and strong.
