Dayz all about realism? Take out the HUD

Recommended Posts

through the forums (or at least what i remember it a month ago), people always talked about making dayz completely focusing on realism.

if that's the case, take out the HUD.

Heads Up Display is the different icons and crap you see on the sides of your screen when playing the game.

things like your health bar, exp bar, and other crap.

but really, i'd kind of like to see the ammo count gone. in reality, you're not counting how many bullets you shoot with a gun (unless it's a pistol).

so when you're shooting and not careful how much you're spreading, you might get screwed and have to reload in a middle of a gun fight.

what do you think?

i'll be eating my hamburger while waiting for your comment.

Thanks.

Rocket has been trying to get away from "realism" and instead focusing on making it authentic, at least to the world of DayZ.

As for your suggestion, I believe this is already the plan, some necessary HUD icons are likely to always exist though but they will be removed as much as possible.

Q: A way to hide the Hud; for in game photographers like me.

A: I want to remove the HUD as much as is possible, and replace it with ingame elements based on visual and audial clues (think: stomach rumbling when hungry).

Q: Are there any plans to completely remove HUD from the game? I think it would definitely help set the atmosphere!

A: Absolutely agree. We will probably have something but it will be heavily cut down. most cues will be visual and audial.

I was actually very reluctant even about the HUD, but it’s very difficult to describe whether someone is hungry or whether they’re bleeding. I have quite a bizarre looking bleeding mechanic, but it gets the message across. But, it was like I didn’t even want to have that stuff on the HUD, but kind of need to have some of those elements.

How about no? This is a game, and you need to have certain elements that guide you and show you what to do and how you feel. It's not realistic at all to remove all the HUD

You've got to find a balance between fun and realism, for its genre I believe Battlefield 3 did well on this. I understand that the realism is partly the fun in this game but there is a line. Removing the HUD is just silly, it's an essential part of the game and actually helps you survive. I mean it's not realistic to die of hunger because you didn't know you were hungry. If you were going to take away the HUD completely there would have to be plenty of visual indicators, and sounds as well such as your belly rumbling or your player stumbling if he is tired.

I don't think this a good idea, I for my part always know, when I am hungry, even when my belly doesn't rumble. And since a (luckily) can't feel, what my character is feeling, I'm ib the need of an Icon that tells me so.

I think a purely audio notification would be not practical, since some players could be hearing impaired (one guy posted something a while back about this topic).

Last but not least how can beeing thirsty be displayed without an icon?

Dayz is a game. IT is allowed to behave like a game. Dayz and Arma are very unrealistic. Trust me compare them to real life. They just happen to be the most realistic games out there so that is what we compare "realism" to when we talk about realistic games.

They are planning to have some kind of hearing impaired mode implemented at some point (as well as colour blind support), in which case you will likely be able to get HUD icons but will lose your sound if selected.
