It's a multiplayer FPS(or 3rd person if you like) with persistent world. MMO is(was) a game genre where hundreds or thousands of player play on AT the same time ON the same server like wow or Eve online. Massively is clearly defined as number of players not the size of the game world.

These days any game wtih multiplayer calls itself that. I mean how is world of tanks a mmo with 10vs10 instanced battles but battlefield with 32vs32 isn't?

DayZ is the mod for ArmA II, one of the greatest military simulators of it's time! For heaven's sake it just boils my blood when people misinterpret DayZ the 'mod' for ArmA II, as of the moment, is a game.

But if you're wondering what category DayZ is, it's a MMORPG, Fantasy genre because it allows us to cast magic spells and tickle each other's nipples with our magic wands.
