Question about Steam + DayZ

It kind of sounds like a noob question, and it probably is. I searched for it and with a quick glance I knew my question wasn't posed recently so here I go.

Do you need Steam to connect to DayZ servers, or do you just need Arma II and Operation Arrowhead?

The easiest way to connect to servers is through a third-party program like DayZ Commander. But no, you don't need steam to play DayZ.
